The attention is focused on this Masters Tournament this year. The Master tournament is an invitational type of competition and is the first major event for the PGA Tour. It is prestigious and monumental. Moreover, this year’s Masters competition is as stirring as ever.
Scottie Scheffler
First on the list is Scottie Scheffler. He is hard to miss, especially as someone that has already played in numerous major events before. However, despite being the case, the player is yet to win an award since his first Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) tour participation in 2018.
However, his odds say otherwise. Golf odds for his recent events are relatively better, and now he is renowned as the number one golfer in the world as he steadily rose to that rank after his recent plays. He might even get his first major title in the Masters.
Cameron Smith
Cameron Smith is currently world 6th on PGA Tour and second on the Masters’ leaderboard, just behind Scheffler. However, Smith is in the chase for Scheffler’s three points. Moreover, after his win during the 2022 Players Championship, this Australian professional golfer has already won five times on the PGA Tour. Smith currently holds +280 odds of winning the 2022 Masters.
Jon Rahm
Jon Rahm is the current world’s number two golfer. However, this Spanish golfer has already tasted being the world’s first several times. After winning the Memorial Tournament, he was first the world’s number one golfer on July 19, 2020. Then, he again ranked first on August 9 in the same year and was again the world’s first on June 20 and July 18, 2021.
He was also the pre-tournament favorite for Masters. However, after an unfortunate event, what Rahm called “bad luck,” he lost his way and is now at rank 26th for this first major event of the PGA Tour. Golf odds for the world’s number are also not looking good.
Collin Morikawa
Collin Morikawa, the world’s third PGA Tour golfer in the world, is nine points short of the first rank. He is currently sitting at eighth place, a little too far away from his world rank. However, this year’s PGA Tour’s first major championship can not invalidate the golfer’s achievements.
This young golfer has already won six professional wins since he turned professional in 2019. Two of his professional wins came from PGA Tour’s major events, 2020’s PGA Championship and 2021’s The Open Championship.
Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson is currently PGA Tour’s world number eight golfer. He has already won over 24 PGA Tour games, and his professional wins total over 28. Two of his wins come from major championships, US Open in 2016 and 2020’s Masters Tournament. With Johnson’s stable progress, he might win Scheffler’s lead and bag the 2022 Masters win.
Rory McIlroy
The world’s number nine golf player, Rory McIlroy, is a 32-year old golf player with a 70 scoring average. He has won four major championships so far. Concerning this, McIlroy’s career highlight was when he won two majors in less than a month in 2014. He was also the youngest player to get $10 million in earnings on the PGA tour, which was a noteworthy achievement. Rory McIlory is currently tied in with Sungjae Im in fourth place.
Sungjae Im
Sungjae Im is a Korean professional golfer playing for the PGA Tour and has won five events. In the first round of the Masters, Im was leading the game. However, it was not for long when players Smith and Scheffler overtook him.
Now, Sungjae Im is in seventh place, tied with Correy Conners. Behind them is Dustin Johnson, who is steadily rising to the leaderboard. It may look rough for the player after losing his lead.
Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry is eight points behind the Master’s first rank, Scheffler, and he is currently in sixth place and a point behind Will Zalatoris in the fourth position. He has won one major championship for the European Tour and another for the PGA Tour’s 2019 Open Championship.
Corey Conners
Conners is running at the seventh rank for the masters together with Sungjae Im. Being tied together, they have Shane Lowry just before them. Conners had his first professional win at one of the PGA Tour’s events in 2019. He turned pro in 2015, and his 2022 US Masters performance is looking good in defending his rank. Whether he will do better than his last year’s record is still unknown.
Will Zalatoris
This American professional golfer is currently tied with Sungjae Im in fourth place. He now had one professional win in 2020, and he just turned professional in 2018. Moreover, Zalatoris had ranked relatively high in previous major games but, unfortunately, did not make it to the cut. If things go well and he can successfully surpass the seven-point lead of Scheffler, he can probably earn another major on his name.
Final Thoughts
Nothing beats the Masters in welcoming the new year. Fans are in their seats while watching the leaderboard unfold right before their eyes, especially with the players’ ranking. There were a few unexpected scenarios, but it will just get more exciting as the tournament continues.
