Tuesday Final Nationals: Cubs-Indians Game 1 on Fox Delivers Best MLB World Series Start in 7 Years

TNT NBA Doubleheader Jumps 10 Percent from Year-Ago Viewer Levels

The meeting of the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians — two franchises with long-suffering world championship droughts — is already delivering ratings dividends for Fox and their coverage of the “2016 World Series.” The network dominated on Tuesday and will look to win the week which will include at least four World Series nights.

Tuesday night’s contest delivered 19.368 million viewers and a 11.3 U.S. household rating/20 share — the best Game 1 figures since 2009 (Phillies-Yankees), just 144,000 viewers shy of that 2009 WS game. It is up +30 percent over 2015 (vs. 14.94 million; New York Mets vs. Kansas City Royals) and is up +59 percent (vs. 12.19 million; San Francisco Giants vs. Kansas City Royals) over 2014.

Viewership peaked with 22.7 million from 9:15-9:30 p.m.

The local markets performed exceptionally well for Game 1 on Tuesday night. Cleveland led all markets by delivering a staggering 46.5/65 overnight rating/share (same market drew a 36.0 rating for Cavaliers/Warriors NBA Finals Game 1 on ABC 6/02/16). Chicago posted a strong 34.1/51.

Opposite the World Series, TNT’s exclusive NBA Opening Night doubleheader featuring the New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs vs. Golden State Warriors averaged 3.2 million total viewers — up +10 percent over last year’s comparable doubleheader — and a 1.9 U.S. household Rating to deliver the network’s most-viewed and highest-rated opening night coverage since 2013, based on Nielson Fast Nationals.

San Antonio Spurs’ lopsided 129-100 win over Golden State Warriors averaged a 2.1 U.S. household rating and 3.48 million total viewers, up +40 percent and +38 percent, respectively, vs. last year’s comparable game (Pelicans/Warriors – 2.5 million viewers, 1.5 U.S. household rating in 2015). In the opener, the Cavaliers’ 117-88 win over the Knicks averaged a 1.7 U.S. household rating and 2.87 million total viewers.

The Spurs/Warriors telecast peaked with 4.1 million total viewers from 12-12:15 a.m. Knicks/Cavaliers peaked with an average of 3 million total viewers from 9:30-9:45 p.m.

TNT’s Spurs/Warriors telecast generated a 12.4 household rating in the Bay Area (San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose), the network’s highest rated regular season NBA game telecast ever in the market, and an 11.8 household rating in San Antonio. Knicks/Cavs averaged a 9.1 household rating in Cleveland and a 4.6 in New York.

For last night’s doubleheader, Turner’s TV Everywhere platforms garnered more than 5.5 million minutes of video consumption and 311,000 video starts, +97 percent and +144 percent, respectively, when compared to last year’s opening night.
