Tuesday Final Nationals: MLB All-Star Game on Fox Rises but Cannot Top NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent’

It was the night of the “88th Major League Baseball All-Star Game” on Fox but, with “America’s Got Talent” still Tuesday night’s top telecast in all key figures, NBC remained as the Tuesday night leader in total viewers (10.75 million), which was actually on-par with its most-recent average Tuesday night viewership from June 27.

Fox won the edge among most of the night’s young demos with the Midsummer Classic. The event delivered a combined 9.442 million viewers across Fox, Fox Deportes and Fox Sports GO, up +7 percent vs. last year’s combined audience of 8.829 million viewers.

The year-to-year percentage growth is the biggest increase for an All-Star Game since 2008.

Fox enjoyed year-over-year ratings increases across all major demographics according to Nielsen Media Research, with Men 18-49 up +7 percent (3.1 vs. 2.9), Men 25-54 up +3 percent (3.7 vs. 3.6), Adults 18-49 up +5 percent (2.3 vs. 2.2), and Adults 25-54 up +4 percent (2.8 vs. 2.7).

The 88th Major League Baseball All-Star Game helped the network to its best Tuesday night since Game 6 of the 2016 World Series in November. The game delivered 2.996 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demo, which is a figure that comes up short to this year’s All-Star games of the NBA and NFL (of course, the MLB All-Star Game is the year’s most-watched exhibition of any pro sport in total viewers).

Initial tune-in for Tuesday night’s game began at a 4.8/10 household rating/share (7.997 million viewers) from 8:16 PM ET – 8:30 PM ET and peaked at a 5.9/11 (10.024 million) from 10:00 – 10:15 PM ET.

Prime time half-hour breakdowns for “88th Major League Baseball All-Star Game” in household rating/share and total viewers (adults 18-34, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 rating/share), were as follows:

8:00 (pre-game) 3.9/8, 6.478 million (1.2/8, 1.5/8, 1.9/8)

8:16 4.8/10, 7.997 million (1.4/9, 1.9/9, 2.4/9)

8:30 5.3/10, 8.990 million (1.7/10, 2.2/10, 2.7/10)

9:00 5.6/11, 9.561 million (1.9/10, 2.4/10, 2.8/10)

9:30 5.7/10, 9.604 million (1.8/10, 2.4/10, 2.9/10)

10:00 5.8/11, 9.803 million (1.9/10, 2.5/10, 3.1/10)

10:30 5.7/11, 9.593 million (1.8/10, 2.4/10, 3.0/10)

Kansas City led all markets with a 16.6 rating/28 share, the third straight year that they’ve topped all markets, followed by St. Louis (12.1/21), Cleveland (11.9/21), Minneapolis (9.6/19), New York (9.2/16), Houston (8.9/16), Cincinnati (8.8/15), Denver (7.9/16), Phoenix (7.8/14) and Washington D.C. (7.7/15), to round out the top 10. Miami, the market that hosted this year’s Midsummer Classic, delivered a 5.6/10.

Fox Deportes averaged 114,000 total viewers, up +18 percent over last year (vs. 97,000 viewers) and is the second most-watched MLB All-Star Game in the network’s history.

Fox Sports GO, the live streaming platform that showcases all of Fox Sports’ live events and studio programming, delivered an average-minute audience of 49,441, nearly doubling last year’s average-minute audience of 25,057.
