Tuesday Overnights: Mixed Results for Pair of New Tuesday Entries

NBC's 'The Village' Sampled Out of 'This Is Us," but 'Mental Samurai' Left at the Starting Gate on Fox

Tuesday, March 19, 2019

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 4.4/ 8, CBS: 4.1/ 7, ABC: 2.6/ 5, Fox: 2.0/ 3, CW: 1.1/ 2

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
Fox: +18, CW: +10, ABC: no change, CBS: -11, NBC: -15

Ratings Breakdown:
The news was mixed for the two network series premieres last night. NBC drama “The Village,” which was guaranteed sampling out of “This Is Us,” opened with a dominant 3.7 rating/7 share in the household overnights in the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour. While that did beat competing “The Rookie” on ABC (#2: 3.2/ 6) by 16 percent, it dropped by 37 percent from lead-in “This Is Us” (#1 for the night: 5.9/10 at 10 p.m.). It was 20 percent below year-ago time period occupant “Chicago Med” (4.6/ 8). And it faced an encore telecast of “NCIS: New Orleans” on CBS (#3: 2.9/ 6). Since most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two, consider this a modest start for “The Village.”

On Fox, game show “Mental Samurai,” hosted by Rob Lowe, launched with a fourth-place 1.8/ 3 in the household overnights in the 9 p.m. hour. Comparably, this was 22 percent below lead-in “MasterChef Junior” (#4: 2.3/ 4 at 8 p.m.). And it was only a slight improvement from year-ago time period sitcoms “LA to Vegas” (1.7/ 3) and “The Mick” (1.6/ 3). In other words, consider this a poor start for “Mental Samurai.”

Elsewhere, “American Housewife” on ABC (#3: 3.0/ 5 at 8 p.m.) remains considerably lower than recent time period occupant “The Conners,” which certainly does not help lead-out “The Kids Are Alright” (#3t: 2.3/ 4 at 8:30 p.m.). Of course, that does not benefit comedies “black-ish” (#4: 2.3/ 4) and sophomore “Splitting Up Together” (#3: 2.0/ 3) from 9-10 p.m. either.

NBC opened the evening with “Ellen’s Game of Games,” which remained a positive option in the Tuesday 8 p.m. hour with a second-place 3.7/ 7. The CW was on par with typical Tuesday overnight levels care of “The Flash” (#5: 1.4/ 2 at 8 p.m.) and “Roswell, New Mexico” (#5: 0.9/ 2). And CBS aired a night of all repeats.
