Tuesday Overnights: ‘The Conners’ Holds Steady on ABC in Week 3

CBS Wins; NBC the Network to Beat in Adults 18-49

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2018

Household Rating/Share
CBS: 6.5/11, NBC: 5.8/10, ABC: 3.5/ 6, Fox: 1.8/ 3, CW: 1.1/ 2

Percent Change From the Year-Ago Week:
Note: Fox featured The World Series on the year-ago evening:
ABC: +46, NBC: +35, CBS: – 2, CW: – 8, Fox: -86

Ratings Breakdown:
ABC finished third overall for the evening, trailing CBS and NBC by 46 percent and 40 percent, respectively, in the household overnights. But an immediate positive was episode three of sitcom “The Conners,” which was close to week-ago overnight levels at a 5.6 rating/9 share (#3) in the 8 p.m. half-hour. While the one season reboot of “Roseanne” was notably stronger last spring, this was still 69 percent above year-ago time period occupant “The Middle” (3.5/ 6 on 10/31/17). It is ABC’s highest rated sitcom. And “The Conners” led into a 3.7/ 6 (#3) for week three of “The Kids Are Alright” at 8:30 p.m., which was 54 percent above “Fresh Off the Boat” one year earlier (2.4/ 4).

Also in week three was ABC crime solver “The Rookie,” which was consistent at a third-place 3.3/ 6 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that built from lead-in “Splitting Up Together” (#3: 2.4/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.) by 37 percent and it was 65 percent above year-ago time period occupant “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” (2.0/ 3). Chances are ABC will extend “The Rookie’s” first season episode order.

Also on the alphabet net was critically acclaimed “black-ish” at a 3.0/ 5 (#3) in the 9 p.m. half-hour.

CBS, as usual, dominated the Tuesday overnights with its drama combination of “NCIS” (#1 for the night: 8.2/14), recent entry “FBI” (#2: 6.3/10) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (#1: 5.1/ 9). But NBC is the network to beat care of “The Voice” (#2: 5.1/10), “This Is Us” (#1: 6.6/11) and recent entry “New Amsterdam” (#2: 4.7/ 8), which continues to benefit from the lead-in support.

Elsewhere, Fox could not compete with its pairing of “The Gifted” (#4t: 1.4/ 2), which is heavily dependent on social media, and “Lethal Weapon” (#4: 2.1/ 3). The CW capped off the evening with “The Flash” (#4t: 1.4/ 2) into relocated “Black Lightning” (#5: 0.8/ 1).
