Tuesday Overnights: ‘The Conners’ on ABC Concludes its Successful First Season

'This Is Us' Leads NBC to Victory

TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2019

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 4.9/ 8, CBS: 4.4/ 7, ABC: 3.2/ 5, Fox: 1.7/ 3, CW: 1.2/ 2

-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
ABC: +68, NBC: – 6, CW: -25, Fox: -32, CBS: -41

Ratings Breakdown:
ABC’s “The Conners” closed its first season with a solid 5.6 rating/9 share in the household overnights in the 8 p.m. half-hour, which solidifies its pending renewal. Comparably, this remained a double-digit percent improvement over year-ago time period occupant “The Middle.” Given the circumstances, kudos to all involved for keeping this fictional family alive…and well.

The obstacle on ABC Tuesday remains following “The Conners,” with the 8:30-10 p.m. sitcom rotation – “The Kids Are Alight” (#3: 3.2/ 5), “black-ish” (#3: 2.6/ 4) and sophomore “Splitting Up Together” (#3: 2.0/ 3) – all losing stream. Chances of a third season of “Splitting Up Together” seem nil.

At 10 p.m., ABC’s freshman “The Rookie” (2.9/ 5) remained the No. 3 option, trailing “NCIS: New Orleans” on CBS (#1: 4.7/ 8) and “New Amsterdam” on NBC (#2: 4.1/ 8) by 29 percent and 36 percent, respectively.

On CBS, night two of the new season of “Celebrity Big Brother” scored a third-place 3.5/ 6 in the 8 p.m. hour, which was certainly no “NCIS.” And it led into a solid (and second place) 5.2/ 9 for freshman “FBI” at 9 p.m., which proves that the Dick Wolf drama can stand on its own.

On NBC, “This Is Us” topped the night at a 6.0/10 in the household overnights at 9 p.m., building by 30 percent from just renewed “Elllen’s Game of Games” (#2: 4.6/ 8 at 8 p.m.).

In week two news, reboot drama “Roswell, New Mexico” slipped to a 1.0/ 2 at 9 p.m., which was nine percent below the 1.1/ 2 opener last week. Comparably, that was 27 percent below lead-in “The Flash” (#5: 1.5/ 2 at 8 p.m.).

  1. How did The Conners do in comparison with last year’s finale? From what I recall, 5.6 rating/9 is the opposite of growth and more a big drop without Roseanne in the TV picture.

    • There were no doubts the show would suffer in ratings without Roseanne, but in the overall scheme of Live TV ratings (which year to year typically fall given the current TV landscape), the show has done amazingly well.

  2. The Conners has been a huge success this season for ABC maybe it’s their new LMS but they need to pair it with a new multi-cam comedy this fall. The comedies behind The Conners, on the other hand, have a been a disaster they all should get canned as black-ish is the only one that should get another season because of syndication but that’s going to need to end soon. I’d keep The Rookie and pair it with NYPD Blue next season.

Ellen’s Game of Games is the real deal for NBC but they should really start to worry about TIU and how long this is going to last for them and New Amsterdam has been an absolute flop for them.

Loving Celebrity Big Brother as After Dark last night was pretty interesting caught it after watching Temptation Island. FBI is the real deal looks like CBS made a mistake there not boosting that after the AFC Championship Game over Magnum, PI which has bombed for CBS even though they don’t want to admit it.

  3. CBS is circling the drain without Les as Magnum was just inexplicably renewed, and while I like The Rookie, it is also failing miserably in the ratings. But the Conners is most definitely not a big hit, and the finale storyline is going to cost them a big chunk of viewers in the flyover states.
