Voice Actress Janet Waldo Dead at 96

Remembered As the Voice of Judy Jetson on 'The Jetsons'

Janet Waldo, who is remembered as the voice behind Judy Jetson on animated classic “The Jetsons,” died Sunday at her home in Encino, California from an inoperable brain tumor. She was 96.

Born Janet Marie Waldo Feb. 4, 1920 in Yakima, Washington, Waldo began her career with bit roles in theatricals like “Cocoanut Grove,” “Hunted Men,” “Sing, You Sinners” and “The Star Maker” in the late 1930s. Waldo was heard on radio on comedy “Meet Corliss Archer,” amongst many other series, and guest-starred in an early episode of “I Love Lucy.” But she made her mark as a voice actress in numerous animated series including Josie on “Josie and the Pussycats,” Penelope Pitstop on “Wacky Races” and Fred’s overbearing mother-in-law on “The Flintstones.”

She is survived by a sister; a son, Jonathan; a daughter, Lucy Lee; and two grandchildren.
