Most-Watched ‘Tony Awards’ Telecast in 15 Years

Adult 18-49 and Adult 25-54 Demo Ratings Best Since 2003

The 70th Annual Tony Awards,” hosted by James Corden and featuring 11 wins for “Hamilton” (including Best Musical), rose to its largest audience since 2001. It averaged 8.73 million viewers from 8-11 p.m. ET, according to the fast nationals from Nielsen. Comparably, this is 35% above the 6.46 million viewers for the year-ago telecast (on June 7, 2015). Results among adults 18-49 (1.6 rating; up 60%) and adults 25-54 (2.0 rating; up 54%) were the highest since 2003.

The final 15-minutes of the telecast, which aired until 11:15 p.m. ET, are not included in these fast nationals. The Live + Same Day data will be released tomorrow morning.

“Hamilton” fell one Tony short of tying the record for the most wins in one night. That honor remains with musical “The Producers,” which took home 12 trophies in 2001.
