Wednesday Overnights: Baseball Rules on Fox; Shelley Long Departs From ABC’s ‘Modern Family’

NBC's Chicago-Set Trio Remain a Midweek Success

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2018

Household Rating/Share
Fox: 9.5/16, NBC: 5.0/ 8, CBS: 3.7/ 6, ABC: 3.1/ 5, CW: 0.8/ 1

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +25, CW: no change, ABC: – 3, Fox: – 4, CBS: -16

Ratings Breakdown:
Fox led the Tuesday overnights care of game 2 of the 2018 World Series, but a 2 to 0 lead for the Boston Red Sox could mean only a four game series. Boston’s 4 to 2 victory over Los Angeles last night translated into an approximate 9.5 rating/16 share in households for the 8-10 p.m. portion. The game concluded at 11:23 p.m. ET and the overnight results past 10 p.m. ET were not available.

On NBC, the Chicago-set trio – “Chicago Med” (5.4/ 9), “Chicago Fire” (5.2/ 9) and “Chicago PD” (4.5/ 8) – remained a solid option. Each drama finished second behind baseball and NBC, on average, increased 25 percent from the year-ago combination of “The Blacklist,” ”Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago PD.”

Elsewhere, consistency remains the observation for veteran “Survivor.,” which scored a typical 4.7/ 8 in the 8 p.m. hour. But 9-11 p.m. Eye net dramas “SEAL Team” (#4: 3.5/ 6) and “Criminal Minds” (#3: 3.0/ 5) remain on the double-digit downside.

In week two news, CW drama “All American” avoided the typical 10 to 20 percent overnight erosion with week to week growth of 20 percent. It scored a 0.6/ 1 (#5) in households at 9 p.m. out of a 1.1/ 2 (#5) for lead-in “Riverdale,” and it was on par with year-ago time period occupant “Dynasty.”

On ABC, veteran “Modern Family” featured the passing of matriarch DeDe (Shelley Long), which netted a fourth-place 4.1/ 7 in the 9 p.m. half-hour. Comparably, this was flat from the year-ago evening and it led into newbie “Single Parents” at a 2.7/ 4 (#4) at 9:30 p.m. That was a loss of 34 percent out of “Modern Family.”

Earlier in the evening on ABC were comedies “The Goldbergs” (#4: 3.5/ 6) and “American Housewife” (#4: 3.1/ 5) from 8-9 p.m. Recently introduced drama “A Million Little Things” signed-off with a 2.7/ 5 (#4) at 10 p.m., which was flat from “Designated Survivor” one year earlier.
