Ratings Breakdown:
CBS got over the Wednesday “hump” in winning overnight fashion thanks to warhorse “Survivor,” which led the evening with a 5.4 rating/9 share in the 8 p.m. hour. Comparably, this was on par with the year-ago evening and it led into full season renewed drama “SEAL Team” at a first-place 4.3/ 7 at 9 p.m. Veteran “Criminal Minds” continues to lag at 10 p.m., however, with a second-place 3.6/ 7 at 10 p.m., which was 14 percent below year-ago occupant “Code Black.”

”Code Black” will be returning for a third season on an unconfirmed day and time.

On Fox, drama “Empire” will certainly lead the evening in adults 18-49 (and all the key demo groups), but a 4.2/ 7 in the household overnights at 8 p.m. was 14 percent below the 4.9/ 8 one year earlier at 9 p.m.

”Empire” led into sophomore “Star,” which dipped by 31 percent with a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 at 9 p.m.

Elsewhere, NBC’s “Chicago PD” (#1: 4.3/ 7 at 10 p.m.), was the top-rated scripted drama of the evening, besting competing “Criminal Minds” on CBS (#2: 3.6/ 7) and “Designated Survivor” on ABC (#3: 2.8/ 5) by 19 percent and 54 percent, respectively. Just one-tenth of a rating point behind “Chicago PD” was lead-in “Law & Order: SVU” at a 4.2/ 7 (#2) at 9 p.m.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was an encore telecast of holiday special “A Very Pentatonix Christmas” at a fourth-place 3.1/ 5 at 8 p.m.

On ABC, the 8-10 p.m. sitcom block – “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.7/ 6), “Speechless” (#4: 2.9/ 5), “Modern Family” (#3: 4.1/ 7) and “American Housewife” (#3: 3.0/ 5) – was close to recent overnight levels. And The CW featured social media magnet “Riverdale” (#5: 1.0/ 2 at 8 p.m.) into modest “Dynasty” (#5: 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m.), which was renewed for the full season despite the lagging ratings.
