Wednesday Overnights: Chicago Set Franchise Leads NBC to Victory

Modest Opening for ABC Drama 'A Million Little Things'

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2018

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 5.3/ 9, CBS: 4.2/ 7, Fox: 4.1/ 7, ABC: 3.7/ 6, CW: 0.5/ 1

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +32, CW: no change, ABC: – 5, Fox: -15, CBS: -21

Ratings Breakdown:
NBC topped this first Wednesday of the new TV season care of the season premiere installments its trio of Chicago-themed dramas: “Chicago Med” (5.4 rating/9 share at 8 p.m.), “Chicago Fire” (5.6/ 9 at 9 p.m.) and “Chicago PD” (4.9/ 9 at 10 p.m.). Each drama won its time period in the overnight households and the three, on average, bested the combination of “The Blacklist,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago Med” one year earlier by 32 percent.

In series premiere news, ABC sitcom “Single Parents” was sampled at a third-place 3.6/ 6 in the household overnights at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, that was equal to “American Housewife” on the year-ago evening, and it held 10 percent of its “Modern Family” lead-in (#3: 4.0/ 7 at 9 p.m.). Comparably, this 10th season premiere of “Modern Family” was 17 percent below its year-ago season-opening overnight tally (4.8/ 8 on 9/27/17).

At 10 p.m. on ABC was the series premiere of drama “A Million Little Things,” which finished second behind “Chicago PD” with a 3.9/ 7 in households. Comparably, this was on par with the season premiere of “Designated Survivor” on the year-ago evening. Since most new network series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, consider this a modest start for “A Million Little Things.”

Earlier in the evening on the alphabet net from 8-9 p.m. were the season premiere episodes of comedies “The Goldbergs” (#4: 3.6/ 6), which slipped by 10 percent from the year-ago opener (4.0/ 7), and “American Housewife” (#4: 3.2/ 5).

Over at CBS, a 90-minute installment of veteran “Survivor,” themed “David vs. Goliath,” scored a respectable 4.8/ 8 from 8-9:30 p.m., which was just six percent below the 5.1/ 9 year-ago season premiere. The clock keeps ticking on “Survivor”!

“Survivor” led into the 90-minute season finale of “Big Brother,” which scored a 3.6/ 6 from 9:30-11 p.m. As for “Swaggy C” proposing to Bayleigh, note to producer Allison Grodner: I do believe most “Big Brother” fans would have preferred hearing from Kaitlyn and Rachel instead. I mean, wasn’t Rachel’s exit the most abrupt departure in “Big Brother” history?

Also opening their seasons was Fox’s combination of dramas “Empire” (#3: 4.7/ 8) and “Star” (#4: 3.5/ 6) from 8-10 p.m. Compared to their year-ago season premieres, the slippage was 15 percent from “Empire” and 12 percent for “Star.”

The CW capped off the evening with an original installment of “Burden of Truth” (#5: 0.6/ 1 at 8 p.m.) into an encore telecast of “Supergirl” (#5: 0.4/ 1 at 9 p.m.).
