Wednesday Overnights: Clean Sweep in Households for NBC

Fox's 'The Masked Singer' is the Real Deal

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2019

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 5.4/ 9, Fox: 3.6/ 6, CBS: 3.0/ 5, ABC: 2.6/ 4, CW: 0.7/ 1

Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +26, Fox: + 3, CW: -12, ABC: -19, CBS: -29

Ratings Breakdown:
It was another clean household overnight sweep for NBC care of the Dick Wolf Chicago-set trio: “Chicago Med” (#1 for the night: 5.8 rating/10 share at 8 p.m.), “Chicago Fire” (5.5/ 9 at 9 p.m.) and “Chicago PD” (5.0/ 9 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, this was a 26 percent increase from the year-ago combination of dramas “The Blacklist,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago PD.” And this remains the most successful programming maneuver of the broadcast networks this season.

In week three news, Fox’s unusual “The Masked Singer” remained the real deal at a consistent 4.8/ 8 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, this was double the household rating of lead-in “Gordon Ramsay’s 48 Hours to Hell and Back” (#2: 4.8/ 8 at 8 p.m.) and it was 14 percent above year-ago time period occupant “9-1-1” (4.2/ 7 on 1/17/18). Expect another top 10 finish for the week among adults 18-49 for “The Masked Singer.”

In week two news, ABC sitcom “Schooled” dipped to a 2.8/ 5 at 8:30 p.m., which was 18 percent below the 3.4/ 6 one week earlier. Comparably, overnight retention for “Schooled” out of parent series “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.5/ 6 at 8 p.m.) was 80 percent.

Next on ABC was veteran “Modern Family” (#2: 3.6/ 6 at 9 p.m.), which I am not so necessarily sure is in its final season, followed by struggling freshman “Singer Parents” (#4: 2.1/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.) and “The Match Game” (#3: 1.8/ 3 at 10 p.m.).

Elsewhere, The CW has nothing unusual to report with its pairing of dramas “Riverdale” (#5: 0.9/ 1 at 8 p.m.) and “All American” (#5: 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m.). And CBS was in all repeats.
