Wednesday Ratings Scorecard: Fox’s ‘Almost Family’ Squanders Lead-In Support from ‘The Masked Singer’

NBC Remains Solid With it's 'Chicago' Trio; Slow Start for 'Nancy Drew' on The CW

What follows are the fast affiliate rating results for Wednesday, October 9, 2019.  These results are time period based and are subject to change:

Total Viewers:
CBS: 8.78 million, NBC: 6.99, ABC: 3.70, Fox: 3.24, CW: 1.37

Adults 18-49:
NBC: 1.3 rating/6 share, CBS: 0.9/ 4, Fox: 0.8/ 4, ABC: 0.7/ 3, CW: 0.5/ 2

Key Observations:
-Week two of Fox drama “Almost Family” lost more than half of the audience from lead-in “The Masked Singer” last night.

-NBC offers the most consistent schedule on Wednesday with regularly scheduled programs than any network all week care of “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD.”

-No show on The CW, the season premiere of “Riverdale” and the series launch of “Nancy Drew” last night, resonates via the live Nielsen ratings. DVR playback and social media interest remain key benchmarks.

-CBS’ relocated “S.W.A.T.” remained the third place occupant in the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour.

-The reunion of sorts of Kirstie Alley, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt and John Ratzenberger from “Cheers” only gave ABC’s “The Goldbergs” a minor boost.

-ABC’s “Stumptown” is not benefiting out of the lack of lead-in support from sophomore sitcom “Single Parents.”

-ABC is wise to finally be ending “Modern Family” this season.

  1. FROM NBC
NBC’S “CHICAGO” LINEUP WINS WEDNESDAY IN TOTAL VIEWERS, “FIRE” & “MED” ARE THE #1-2 SHOWS IN VIEWERS AHEAD OF “THE MASKED SINGER”

“FIRE” IS #2 FOR THE NIGHT IN 18-49, SCORCHES THE 9-10 P.M. COMPETITION TO WIN THE HOUR BY A +50% MARGIN

“P.D.” CAPTURES THE 10 P.M. TIMESLOT IN 10 OF 10 KEY MEASURES, TRIUMPHS BY A +67% MARGIN IN ADULTS 18-49

“CHICAGO MED” TOPS “MASKED SINGER” TO WIN THE 8 P.M. HOUR IN TOTAL VIEWERS

“MED” GROWS +10% VS. LAST WEEK’S FAST-AFFILIATE 1.0 IN 18-49; “FIRE” IS UP +9% TO MATCH THE SHOW’S HIGH SINCE A FEB. 20 CROSSOVER

DELAYED / DIGITAL / SOCIAL: LAST SEASON, “MED” GREW BY +125% OVER L+SD RATINGS WITH DELAYED VIEWING ON ALL PLATFORMS, “FIRE” INCREASED BY +142% AND “P.D.” TRIPLED ITS NEXT-DAY RATING

  2. FROM THE CW

L+SD is a smaller and smaller portion of The CW’s overall audience, particularly the younger demos.

We continue to see tons of delayed viewing in L+7 and streaming (an anecdote below).

The season three premiere of RIVERDALE improved 37% over last year’s finale in viewers (1.179mil vs 0.861mil) and 100% in A18-34 (0.4 vs 0.2) and 33% in A18-49 (0.4 vs 0.3).

NANCY DREW is off to a solid start with 1.174mil total viewers — a 71% improvement over last year’s series premiere of ALL AMERICAN (1.174mil vs. 0.685mil) in the same time period.

NANCY DREW pulled the highest audience in the time period in nearly two years (since November 22, 2017). It’s also holds the highest retention out of RIVERDALE to date (vs. ALL AMERICAN and DYNASTY).

For RIVERDALE, please note that last year’s regularly schedule originals saw an average increase from LSD to L7 of 86% in total viewers, 130% in A18-34 and a 109% increase in A18-49. As I’m sure you’re aware, RIVERDALE is consistently one of the most streamed shows on The CW’s digital platforms.

This week in particular, we are seeing a strong demand for viewing The CW’s programming on mobile – as evidenced by The CW app (currently) being the #1 free download on Apple’s App Store Charts (see attached image). This is the second day The CW app has been #1. This marks the third year that the network’s app has been #1 at some point during premiere week.

Given the popularity of apps such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, it’s pretty cool to see a broadcast network have some digital legs (and demand).

  3. The Chicagoans are doing so well for NBC they are so lucky to have this trio and they’re becoming a real problem for the other networks to crack since they suck up those female demos so well.

Nice start for Nancy Drew as well didn’t expect it to do this well really holding Riverdale’s audience perfectly and getting an 0.3 instead of an 0.2 in the demo. Expect Nancy Drew to be back for a 2nd season.
