The 2023/24 NFL season is all set to kick off on the evening of Thursday, September 7th. The game between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs will be broadcast on NBC as the Chiefs attempt to defend their Super Bowl win.
The state of New York has three teams competing this year, the Buffalo Bills, the New York Giants, and the New York Jets, so local rivalries will also play a part in the coming year.
Keep reading to learn more about which NY team has the best chance of success this year and the players to look out for.
NFL 2023/24
Online sportsbooks have been legal in New York since 2021 and launched in early 2022. So, anyone looking to bet in New York and back their favorite NFL team has a great selection of sportsbooks and markets to choose from. So where do New York’s NFL teams stand in bookies’ lists of favorites for the upcoming season?
The current favorites to be this year’s champions are last year’s Super Bowl winners the Kansas City Chiefs, who sit at around +600 with most sportsbooks. The second favorite is last season’s runners-up, the Philadelphia Eagles, who are at about +750.
The first New York teams to feature in the betting odds for this year’s Super Bowl are the Buffalo Bills, joint third favorite alongside the San Francisco 49ers.
The New York Jets are a bit further down the pecking order in seventh place at +1600, with the New York Giants seen as the biggest outsider of the three in 16th place with odds of +4000.
While betting odds give people a good idea of the teams expected to compete this year, they don’t paint the full picture. Coaching changes, new signings, and injuries can all have a significant impact on how a team will perform.
That’s why we have had a deeper look into the chances of New York’s three teams this year:
Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are considered to have a great chance of winning their first Super Bowl this year. Their quiet offseason will help with the team’s stability, and following last season’s impressive performances, they will be hoping to continue that form.
Starting QB Josh Allen, and receiver Stefon Diggs are two of the top NFL players. Sean McDermott has also created a well-drilled defense, ensuring the Bills don’t have an obvious weak spot for opponents to exploit.
The signings of Connor McGovern and Poona Ford add some steel to the heart of the team, while the addition of Leonard Floyd takes the pressure off Von Miller who is recovering from an ACL injury.
The Bills are offering a bit more value for money than last season when they were priced at around +600 and could be dark horses despite the relatively tame off-season.
The Buffalo Bills start their campaign away at the Jets on Monday, September 11th, and face the Giants at home on the 15th of October for their week 6 match-up.
New York Jets
The New York Jets’ odds of +1600 place the team as outsiders, but there is still a glimmer of hope for them to repeat their heroics of 1969 and lift the Super Bowl.
The addition of Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers is the big news from the Jets’ offseason. The legendary QB might be approaching 40, but his experience could make a big difference to the team this year.
A solid 2022 draft that saw them pick up Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner, and Breece Hall puts them in a good position for this season and the addition of Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb from the Packers this year will also help.
Nathaniel Hackett joins the Jets as the offensive coordinator and a lot of this season’s hopes will hinge on whether Rodgers still has another good year or two in his arm.
As we already know, the Jets kick off their campaign against the Buffalo Bills at home on September 11th. They take on the Giants during week 8’s fixtures on the 29th of October.
New York Giants
At +4000 odds, it is likely that only diehard fans of the Giants will back them for this year’s Super Bowl. Starting QB Daniel Jones will hope to improve on his career-best statistics of last season and could be the main man this year.
The loss of Julian Love and Nick Gates will be felt, but the addition of Bobby Okereke is a positive step. The Giants also had a good draft with Deonte Banks, Jalin Hyatt, and John Michael Schmitz all regarded as good picks.
Week 1 sees the Giants face up against the Dallas Cowboys on the 10th of September before meeting the Bills in week 6 and the Jets in week 8.
