ABC is developing a potential spin-off from sitcom “The Goldbergs,” which would be set in the 1990s and would feature Bryan Callen. Callen, at present, plays no-nonsense gym teacher Rick Mellor, and the spin-off will center on two high school teachers who become unlikely father figures to the school secretary’s three misfit kids. The setting is expected to be Philadelphia. To-date, Callen has appeared in 17 episodes of “The Goldbergs.”

“The Goldbergs” executive producer Marc Firek and Goldberg are writing the script for the single-camera comedy. Doug Robinson and Seth Gordo, who executive produce “The Goldbergs,” are attached to exec produce the spinoff as well.

The news of the proposed “Goldbergs” spin-off comes on the heels of news of a planned prequel spin-off from “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS. Later this season NBC will feature “The Blacklist – Redemption,” a spin-off from :The Blacklist.”
