Nominations for the 89th Academy Awards have been announced. Leading the pack is “La La Land” with 14, which ties the records held by “Titanic” in 1997 and “All About Eve” in 1950.” Sci-fi film “Arrival” and coming-of-age drama “Moonlight” rank second with the most nominations, with eight each (including best picture). The other nominees for best picture are: ”Manchester by the Sea,” ”Hell or High Water,” ”Lion,” ”Fences,” ”Hidden Figures” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”

Unlike last year, when no individuals of color were nominated in the acting and directing categories, the Academy has nominated Denzel Washington for lead actor in “Fences;” Ruth Negga for lead actress in “Loving;” Mahershala Ali and Dev Patel for supporting actor in “Moonlight” and “Lion,” respectively; and Viola Davis (“Fences”), Naomie Harris (“Moonlight”) and Octavia Spencer (“Hidden Figures”) for best supporting actress. “Moonlight’s” Barry Jenkins was also nominated for best director.
