Ratings Breakdown:
NBC stood well above the competition last night, ignited by the return of singing competition “The Voice” at a hefty 8.0 rating/13 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. ET. That was right on par with the year-ago season opener, and it led into the debut of drama “Taken” at a respectable second-place 4.6/ 9 at 10 p.m. While “Taken” did trail competing “Scorpion” on CBS (#1: 4.8/ 9) by four percent and held only 55 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.3/13), it is a lock for dominance in the hour in adults 18-49 (and all the key demographics). “Taken” was also equal to year-ago time period occupant “Blindspot.” And this was NBC’s best overnight performance in the time period since the “SNL Election Special” on Nov. 7.

Also debuting last night was ABC limited series “When We Rise,” which was a bust at a mere 2.1/ 4 in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, that dropped from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “The Bachelor” (#2: 5.2/ 8) by 60 percent. And it declined by 21 percent from the first to second hour (2.4/ 4 to 1.9/ 4). Considering that most new series drop by 10 to 20 percent in week two, consider “When We Rise” very limited.

Overall, a one-hour edition of “The Bachelor” (5.4/ 8) was squashed by the first hour of NBC’s competing “The Voice” (7.7/12).

Earlier in the evening on CBS was a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” (#3: 5.0/ 8 at 8 p.m.) into typical overnights for the 8:30-10 p.m. combination of “Man with a Plan” (#3: 4.6/ 7), recently introduced “Superior Donuts” (#2: 4.3/ 7) and “2 Broke Girls” (#2: 3.8/ 6).

Elsewhere, both “24” Legacy” (#4: 2.9/ 5) and “APB” (#4: 2.4/ 4) on Fox sunk to series lows, while both “Supergirl” (#5: 1.7/ 3) and “Jane the Virgin” (#5: 0.6/ 1) were below average on The CW.
