Ratings Breakdown:
NBC led the midweek overnights thanks, in particular, to annual holiday special “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” at a dominant 5.9 rating/10 share in households at 8 p.m. Comparably, that led into season highs for both “Law & Order: SVU” (#1: 4.8/ 8) and “Chicago PD” (#1: 4.5/ 8) from 9-11 p.m. ET.

Also in the specials department was “Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo” on CBS at a second-place 3.9/ 7 in the household overnights at 10 p.m., which dipped by 19 percent from a 9 p.m. edition of “Survivor” (#1t: 4.8/ 8).

Earlier in the evening on CBS, the regularly scheduled 8 p.m. edition of the always addictive “Survivor” finished second behind aforementioned “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” with a 5.2/ 8. Now in year 18, “Survivor” shows absolutely no signs of any slippage.

Elsewhere, Fox finished third overall with its pairing of “Empire” (#3: 4.0/ 6) and sophomore “Star” (#4: 2.9/ 5), which held 72 percent of the lead-in support from “Empire.” But “Empire,” year-to-year, was down by 25 percent from the 5.3/ 8 on the year-ago evening in the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour.

ABC had nothing unusual to report with its combination of “The Goldbergs” (#4: 3.8/ 6), “Speechless” (#4: 2.8/ 4), “Modern Family” (#3: 4.3/ 7), “American Housewife” (#3: 2.9/ 5) and sophomore drama “Designated Survivor” (#3: 2.8/ 5). Year-to-year, “Designated Survivor” dropped by 32 percent. And The CW featured “Riverdale” (#5: 1.0/ 2 at 8 p.m.), its youngest skewing show, and recent entry “Dynasty” (#5: 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m.), which is hoping the upcoming arrival of Nicollette Sheridan as Alexis Carrington will spark some interest.
