The Chicago Cubs earned MLB’s best regular season record in 2016 with 103 wins-58 losses-1 tie. It was their first season since 1969 the team had never possessed a sub-.500 record for an entire season. The Cubs, who haven’t reached a World Series since 1945 nor have won a World Series since 1908, are the odds-on favorite to win it all this season.
The Cleveland Indians enter the postseason as the American League Central champion for the first time since 2007. Likely American League Manager of the Year Terry Francona will look to have his Indians club overcome a 68-year world championship drought, something he accomplished for the Boston Red Sox (an 86-year drought) as Boston’s manager in 2004. An Indians world title would be a welcome bonus to the city of Cleveland in 2016 which saw its Cavaliers win the NBA championship back in June, breaking a 62-year professional sports championship title drought for the area.
Cleveland’s opponent in the American League Division Series are the A.L. East champion Boston Red Sox, who became the first team in baseball history to ever go from worst-to-first in a division twice within a five-year span. The last time they had finished in first place in the A.L. East was in 2013, the year they would eventually win the World Series.
The Baltimore Orioles reach the American League Wild Card game in their third playoff appearance within the past five seasons, all under manager Buck Showalter. The Orioles had previously not reached the playoffs from 1998-2011.
Returning from last year’s playoffs are the defending National League champion New York Mets, the San Francisco Giants (World Series champions in 2010, 2012, and 2014), the Los Angeles Dodgers (under new manager Dave Roberts), the Toronto Blue Jays (with consecutive playoff appearances for the first time since 1991-93) and the Texas Rangers (earning the American League’s best 2016 regular season record of 95-67).
All games aired on MLB Network, TBS and Fox will be available to MLB.TV subscribers who are authenticated subscribers to the applicable network through a participating pay TV provider. (Cord cutters will be unable to view the MLB postseason via MLB.TV).
