4 Celebrity Knitting Fanatics

cardigan is a type of knit sweater that opens in the front, typically with buttons or zippers. It can be worn by both men and women, and is available in a variety of styles and fabrics.

Knitters feel a kinship with other knitters. So, when we find out that our favorite movie star is a knitter, it’s kind of a big deal. It’s the type of connection that you can’t get by scrolling through those “Celebrities are Just Like Us” click bait galleries.

Scarlett Johansson drinks Starbucks? Big deal, so does everyone. Scarlett Johansson knits? Wait, what? That new information actually humanizes a superhero and instantly sends her up your list of favourite movie stars.

With that in mind, here is our list of the top 4 A-list knitters.

1. Scarlett Johansson

We teased this one in the opening. Yes, the Avengers’ Black Widow is an avid knitter.

She even used her skills to raise money for a great cause back in 2011. She sold hand-knit beanies to raise money for City of Hope, which is a leading cancer research, treatment and education organization. Now that’s a hero!

When you see celebrities stepping up for a great cause, it can inspire you. But, when you see a celeb knitting for charity, you instantly want to stop whatever you’re doing and create something amazing with yarn for the charity of your choice.

2. Julia Roberts

Roberts has made some of the most iconic movies ever made, with classics like Pretty Woman, Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich and Notting Hill. But you may be surprised to learn that she was often knitting between takes while shooting those films.

Her well-known love of knitting was also the target of a playful prank that her co-star, Tom Hanks, played on the set of Larry Crowne. Hanks instructed a production assistant to buy enough needles and yarn for the entire staff, so that when Roberts arrived on set that day, everyone was knitting.

Even Hanks got in on the action.

3. Audrey Hepburn

A timeless hobby for a timeless beauty.

Hepburn can be seen knitting in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, one of her most iconic roles. But she was actually an avid knitter in real life.

Like Roberts, Hepburn was well known for quietly knitting between takes while shooting films. She loved creating sweaters for both herself and her husband, and even made them matching Christmas sweaters.

4. Ryan Gosling

Hey girl, Ryan Gosling knits!

The first male on our list just so happens to be one of the most adored and bankable men in Hollywood.

Gosling first picked up the needles while he was shooting a scene in Lars and the Real Girl where he is surrounded by knitters. Between takes, he decided to try it out for himself and called it one of the most relaxing days of his life.

In fact, when asked about his perfect day, Gosling didn’t hesitate and said he would happily spend it knitting. In his typical self-deprecating tone, he said the day would involve creating something, “For someone who wants an oddly shaped, off-putting scarf.”

So, maybe celebrities really are just like us. If their favourite way to relax is grabbing a cup of tea and some needles, maybe we’re more connected than we think. At the very least, we will have a great icebreaker if we ever actually meet them.
