Saturday Final Nationals: College Football Returns to Dominate the Night for ABC and ESPN

Saturday night TV audiences increased significantly as they turned out in droves for the start of the 2016 college football season. ABC easily won the night overall with “Saturday Night Football” despite Alabama’s trouncing 52-6 victory over USC. In year-to-year total viewers, USC-Alabama (7.944 million) fell below a mere 0.3 percent from Wisconsin-Alabama (7.967 million on Sep. 5, 2015) but, according to ESPN (Source) for USC-Alabama, there was a 59 percent and 73 percent increase in average minute audience and unique users, respectively, on WatchESPN, over last season’s kickoff week ABC Saturday Night game featuring Alabama vs. Wisconsin.

The day’s top cable telecast was ESPN’s Clemson-Auburn (2.64 household rating, 4.742 million viewers) — a 92 percent increase over the year-ago ESPN prime time game Arizona State-Texas A&M (1.38 household rating, 2.471 million viewers). Leading into Clemson-Auburn was Georgia-North Carolina (1.92 household rating, 3.529 million viewers).
