Saturday Final Nationals: Army-Navy Game on CBS Hits 24-Year High in Viewership

CBS won Saturday night overall with its rebroadcasts of holiday programs — “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and “Frosty Returns” — and an original edition of “48 Hours.”

Their prime time lineup benefited from the late afternoon event, the annual “Army-Navy” college football game which drew 7.94 million viewers, up 11 percent from its year-ago game (7.129 million from 12/12/15). Army’s 21-17 victory over Navy — Army’s first win over Navy since 2001 — marks the largest audience for an Army-Navy game in 24 years. It was also the final college football telecast with the legendary Verne Lundquist as play-by-play announcer.

Ratings were not positive for the “Heisman Trophy Presentation” on ESPN. At a 1.6 U.S. household rating and 2.64 million viewers, it was the lowest-rated, least-watched Heisman ceremony telecast since 2001. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson won the prestigious award; Jackson is the youngest person ever to win the Heisman. The “30 for 30” documentary about the Notre Dame-Miami college football rivalry “Catholics vs. Convicts” (1.3 U.S. household rating, 2.11 million viewers) that followed the Heisman Trophy Presentation fared relatively better, drawing the best post-Heisman “30 for 30” ratings in four years.
