‘Still Star-Crossed’ Left at thew Starting Gate on ABC

Ratings Breakdown:
NBC opened the unofficial start of the summer TV season with a first-place finish in the household overnights care of the “2017 Stanley Cup Final” (Nashville Predators at Pittsburgh Penguins) at a 3.5 rating/6 share from 8-11 p.m. ET. Comparably, that was an increase of 25 percent from the 2.8/ 5 for the “Stanley Cup Final” on the year-ago evening.

In series-premiere news was long-delayed Shonda Rhimes ABC drama “Still Star-Crossed” at an anemic (and last place) 1.6/ 3 in the household overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was 27 percent below the season-premiere of “Mistresses” on the year-ago evening (2.2/ 4 on 5/30/16). The overnight household retention for “Still Star-Crossed” out of “The Bachelorette” (4.1/ 7 from 8-10 p.m.) was just 39 percent. And it trailed an encore telecast of “Scorpion” on CBS (2.2/ 4) by 27 percent. Since most new series decline 10 to 20 percent in week two, “Still Star-Crossed” is poised to be the biggest new series failure this summer.

Better news for ABC, of course, was “The Bachelorette,” which year-to-year slipped by just seven percent.

In season-finale news was “Lucifer” on Fox at a third-place 2.3/ 4 from 9-10 p.m., which rose by 10 percent from the 2.1/ 4 for lead-in “Gotham” at 8 p.m. Next fall, “Lucifer” moves to Monday at 8 p.m. ET into new Marvel drama “The Gifted.”

Elsewhere, CBS was in all repeats care of “Kevin Can Wait” (#3: 2.6/ 5), “Man with a Plan” (#3: 2.3/ 4), “Superior Donuts” (#4: 2.2/ 4), canceled “2 Broke Girls” (#4: 1.9/ 3) and aforementioned “Scorpion” (#2: 2.2/ 4). And The CW populated the evening with an encore telecast of “Supergirl” (#5: 0.7/ 1) and two episodes (original and repeat) of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” (#5: avg. 0.7/ 1 from 9-10 p.m.). This fall, “Supergirl” leads into new military drama “Valor.”
