EMRICK & BOUCHER ON THE 2018 NHL ALL-STAR WEEKEND:
Emrick on the excitement of the 3-on-3 format: “If you live hockey every day, you dream up all-time fantasy teams. Do you put Ovechkin and Crosby together with Letang as a threesome for the Metropolitan? Certainly Kucherov and Stamkos for the Atlantic? Who gets to play with McDavid for the Pacific? Does Braden Holtby get another shutout for the Metropolitans like he did in Los Angles? Hey, it’s an offensive show — but I’m ready for skill, great 3-on-3 hockey, and hoping for some surprises.”
Boucher: “The addition of 3-on-3 has been one of the best things for the game, whether we’re talking about regular-season overtime or the exciting format of the All-Star Game. As the minutes wind down, the intensity ratchets up, and I think it’s just the competitive nature of these players. You’re playing a game you want to win. The 3-on-3 allows them to bring out the best attributes in their game.”
Boucher on Tampa Bay hosting the All-Star Game: “It’s a pretty darn good hockey market. The fans in Tampa know a good product when they see it. This is a great hockey city, it’s a place where people want to come and enjoy a game. It’s going to be a great venue for the All-Star Game, and I anticipate the fans in Tampa are going to be watching some great hockey well into the Playoffs this year with the team the Lightning have.”
Boucher on handicapping the All-Star Game: “You could flip a coin, but I like the Atlantic Division the most. I’m not sure it gets any better than their talent up front, but of course any team is capable of winning it. It’s hard to go against the Metro Division, but with four Lightning players, plus their head coach, I think the Atlantic will get a little bit of a home-ice advantage and a push from the fans.”
