Monday Overnights: Below Average Return for ‘The Bachelor’ on ABC

Ratings Breakdown:
The New Year opened with all five broadcast networks down from the comparable year-ago evening. Despite airing all repeats, dominant CBS inched past ABC by one-tenth of a household rating point with its combination of a Monday 8 p.m. edition of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the evening: 4.2 rating/7 share), three episodes of prequel “Young Sheldon” (#1: avg. 4.0/ 6 from 8:30-10 p.m.), and a Monday 10 p.m. airing of freshman drama “SEAL Team” (#2: 2.3/ 4).

In season-premiere news was ABC’s veteran “The Bachelor,” which at a 3.7/ 6 in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. was 16 percent below the 4.4/ 7 for the comparable year-ago season-opener. The peak half-hour was a 3.9/ 6 at 8 p.m. “The Bachelor” led into an encore telecast of “The Good Doctor,” this season’s new breakout drama hit, at a 2.7/ 5 (#1) in the 10 p.m. hour.

On NBC, game show “The Wall” finished a distant third in the 8 p.m. hour with a 2.5/ 4, and that led into two episodes of comical reality series “For Better or Worse” at a modest 2.6/ 4 in the 9 p.m. hour (#3) and a 2.3/ 4 at 10 p.m. (#2t). It looks like the novelty has already worn off.

Elsewhere, Fox could not compete with its drama pairing of “Lucifer” (#4: 2.3/ 4 at 8 p.m.) and “The Gifted” (#4: 1.8/ 3). And The CW featured a repeat of “Supergirl” (#5: 0.5/ 1 at 8 p.m.) into a burn-off installment of canceled freshman military drama “Valor” (#5: 0.5/ 1 at 9 p.m.).
