Ratings Breakdown:
It was all about ABC’s “Roseanne” once again, with week three (and episode four) at a significant 9.2 rating/16 share in the household overnights in the 8 p.m. half hour. Comparably, this was just six percent below the 9.8/16 one week earlier, which translated into 15.4 million viewers and a 3.9 rating/17 share in adults 18-49 (based on the Live+Same Day data), and 20.3 million viewers including 3-days of DVR usage. That said, expect “Roseanne,” the now top-rated series in all of primetime, to surpass 20-million viewers once again.
Once year earlier, ABC’S “The Middle” scored a 3.6/ 6 in the household overnights in the Tuesday 8 p.m. half-hour. Airing out of “Roseanne” last night, soon-to-conclude “The Middle” rose to a 4.9/ 8 (#2) at 8:30 p.m. The rest of ABC’s Tuesday night line-up – “blackish” (#2: 3.6/ 6 at 9 p.m.), “Splitting Up Together” (#2: 3.0/ 5 at 9:30 p.m.) and legal drama “For the People” (#3: 2.2/ 4 at 10 p.m. – did not, unfortunately, benefit. Comparably, this third episode of sitcom “Splitting Up Together” dropped by nine percent from the 3.3/ 5 one week earlier, but still remains an improvement over failed year-ago time period occupant “Imaginary Mary.”
In the specials department was two-hour “Elton John: I’m Still Standing – A Grammy Salute” on CBS at a dominant 5.1/ 9 in the household overnights from 9-11 p.m. The four half-hours fluctuated by only four-tenths of a rating point, and this was 24 percent above an encore telecast of “NCIS” in the 8 p.m. hour (#3: 4.1/ 7).
In season-premiere news was the return of Fox sitcom “New Girl” at a modest fourth-place 1.5/ 2 at 9:30 p.m., which aired out of a 1.6/ 3 for “LA to Vegas” at 9 p.m. (#4). Earlier in the evening on Fox was sure-to-be renewed “Lethal Weapon” at a heftier 2.9/ 5 (#4) from 8-9 p.m.
Elsewhere, NBC opened the evening with a clips edition of “The Voice” at a still very respectable 4.9/ 8 (#2) in the 8 p.m. hour. Next was recent drama entry “Rise” at a consistent 3.0/ 5 from 9-10 p.m., which certainly does not compare to recent time period occupant “This Is Us.” And “Chicago Med” capped off the evening for the Peacock net with a second-place 4.2/ 7.
The CW featured its top-rated series, “The Flash” (#5: 1.5/ 3 at 8 p.m.), into a 1.2/ 2 for compatible “Black Lightning” at 9 p.m. (#5: 1.2/ 2). Both dramas are confirmed to return next season.
