Toronto’s Shining Stars in Sports

Toronto has a long sporting history and is home to several big clubs and teams, well-known around the world. Sports support and betting (by joining up to Betway) is a big part of cultures all over the world and this city is no different.

Vince Carter

Toronto’s successful NBA basketball team, Raptors, has made it to three NBA playoffs, in which Carter was a key player in leading them there in 2001. Carter helped the Raptors out of the gutter, after they had suffered in their early years; signing him in 1998 gave the team the boost they needed.

However, Carter was traded in 2004 after the team failed to gain a place in the Eastern Conference semi-final in 2002-03 season and again in 2003-04.

Wendel Clark

Clark is a former professional Ice Hockey player who played for several big league teams during his career, including the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League and have five division championships.

Clark was drafted by the Leafs in 1985 and was known for his physical play, offensive mind and scoring expertise, scoring a total of 34 goals while playing for the team from 1985-87. He was a crowd favorite at Maple Leaf gardens and despite his back injury hindering his professional career, he went on to play for the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Detroit Red Wings and other major League teams.

Joe Carter

Former professional baseball player, Joe Carter, played for the Toronto Blue Jays, along with other big teams during his long and successful career, including the Chicago Bears, Cleaveland Indians and San Francisco Giants.

The Blue Jays have won two division titles, thanks to Carter helping the team win back in 1991 after he hit the game winning single. Along with the division title, he also led the Blue Jays to their first World Series Championship after he hit two homeruns and recorded the final out of the series. Carter player for the team in five seasons, ultimately leaving and shortly playing for other teams (Orioles and Giants) before he retired.

Edwin Encrnacion

While on the sport of baseball, Edwin Encrnacion was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 and played 42 games in his first season. As he continued to play for the team, he hit his stride in the 20012-13 season, hitting his fourth career grand slam in the 8th inning, resulting in the Blue Jays winning 7-0 and he only got better from there. In 2014, Encarnacion hit his 200th home run and was later named the American League Player of the Week and became the first Blue Jays player to ever have four multi home runs in a single month and the first major player to do so since 2010.

Encarnacion left the Blue Jays in 2016 and went on to play for the Cleveland Indians.
