Contrasts of the Two Versions of ‘The Conners’ Live Episode on ABC

The live episode of ABC’s top-rated sitcom “The Conners“, fittingly entitled “Live from Lanford”, took place on Feb. 11.

During the episode, Louise (Katey Sagal) received an opportunity that would send her away from Lanford, which prompted the Conner family to interfere in Dan’s (John Goodman) complicated relationship with her.

The Feb. 11 episode also involved Mark (Ames McNamara) watching the results of the New Hampshire Democratic Primary for a school report with his sister Harris (Emma Kenney), while the rest of the Conner family share their differing reasons on why everyone should vote.

Because “The Conners” performed two versions of the same episode — one for the Eastern and Central time zones, the other for the Pacific — the references to the live primary results (as well as the jokes by the characters of Mark and Lecy Goranson’s Becky) were different in each version.

For the Eastern and Central time zones, when Becky asked for an update on New Hampshire, Mark replied, “Uh, fifteen percent of the vote is in. I have a theory that the DNC [Democratic National Committee] is holding back some of the results. They don’t want to affect the numbers in Iowa.” Later, when Harris had asked if the primary is almost over, Mark replied, “No, but Sanders is doing well. Some of the experts think if he wins, there’s a chance he might stop yelling.

For the Pacific time zone, when Becky asked for an update on New Hampshire, Mark replied, “They’re saying Bernie won it, but there could be some Russian hacking. Putin’s in second.” (To which Becky retorts, “HA! The Russians are so bad at hacking, he’s only in second!“) Later, Harris had asked if the primary is almost over, Mark replied, “Yeah, Klobuchar held at 20 percent. Her hair is taking credit for the strong showing.

One of the similar aspects to both versions was a reference to a tweet sent out by D.J.’s (Michael Fishman) daughter Mary Conner (Jayden Rey) asking the president for some cheese packets for their macaroni.
