The CW to Develop ‘Riverdale’ Spin-off Featuring Sabrina

Proposed Series Is Being Targeted for 2018

The CW is developing a one-hour “Riverdale” spinoff titled “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which will reimagine the origin and adventures of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft. The logline: This adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

The proposed series is being adapted from the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” from writer Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack. Aguirre-Sacasa will also write for the new series, and executive produce along with fellow “Riverdale” EPs Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater. “Riverdale” director Lee Toland Krieger is also executive producing, and will direct the “Sabrina” pilot.

Of course, this is not the first series to be based on the Sabrina character. Melissa Joan Hart headlined sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” on ABC from 1996 to 2000 and for an additional three seasons on The WB (from 2000 to 2003).
