Wednesday Overnights: ‘America’s Got Talent’ Concludes Stellar Season

What follows are the metered market (overnight) results in households by network and by half-hour for Wednesday, September 20, 2017:

Household Rating/Share
NBC: 7.6/13, CBS: 3.4/ 6, Fox: 2.9/ 5, ABC: 1.8/ 3, CW: 0.5/ 1

Note: The year-ago time period averages are excluded due to the 2016-17 TV season officially beginning.

-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC, of course, stood well above the competition last night care of the two-hour season-finale of “America’s Got Talent,” which capped off its stellar season with a significant 9.6 rating/16 share in the overnight households from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this was up by four percent from the year-ago season-ender, which translated into14.41 million viewers and a 2.8 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016, based on the Live + Same Day data. Congratulations Darcey Lynne!

Also closing their seasons was a two-hour edition of “Big Brother” on CBS (4.1/ 7 from 8-10 p.m.) and Fox cooking competition “MasterChef,” which scored a 3.0/ 5 in the 9 p.m. hour (out of a 2.7/ 8 for the 8-9 p.m. edition).

SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read this paragraph if you don’t want to know who won “Big Brother.” In a season marred by favoritism to one returning house guest, Paul’s second place finish behind Josh felt very satisfying. He overplayed and became way too arrogant. As for Cody and Jessica, I predict we will see them next competing on “The Amazing Race.” And, as for next summer’s edition, please…no more returnees!

Also concluding for the season (or series) was CBS drama “Salvation” at a distant second-place 1.9/ 4 in the 10 p.m. hour. Competing with “Salvation” was the second season premiere of NBC comedy “The Good Place,” which at a dominant 4.3/ 8 jumped by 33 percent from last season’s finale (2.7 on Thursday, Jan. 19). But it also slipped by 59 percent from the 9:30 p.m. portion of “America’s Got Talent” (2.9/ 6).

A second episode of “The Good Place,” which airs Thursday at 8:30 p.m. this season out of “Superstore,” won the 10:30 p.m. half-hour with a 2.9/ 6.
