Many schoolchildren and students are online: video conferencing, sending tasks by email, chat rooms with teachers. Not everyone is easy to give because the format is unusual.
In connection with the heavy epidemiological situation, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education gave universities the right to switch to the remote mode of training and preparation. This is a typical practice in all countries of the world, which helps to reduce the number of cases of infection.
Humanitarian universities are quite easy to switch to training using remote technologies, while “technical” is hard to do without full-time laboratory work. In most cases, to preserve the quality of the educational process, the logic of educational plans will be or already changed. Laboratory, practitioners, and similar works will simply be transferred to the end of the semester or the next semester. There are, of course, other organizational complexity: software, changing the format of materials used, and so on.
There are difficulties not only from universities, like organizations but also in person personally. Most of the difficulties are based on false stereotypes. How do I cope with them?
Difficulty №1. Distance education is not free
Unfortunately, remote education is much harder for the student than full-time. It is difficult to maintain motivation in the separation from the usual study group, in the absence of visual contact with the teacher and the disciplining atmosphere of the university. Moreover, classes from the house create a false feeling of “simplicity” of what is happening, especially if you try to attend them directly from the sleeping position.
It means that any student needs to make more effort to achieve the effectiveness of the educational process as if to overcome the cozy home atmosphere.
First, I advise you to comply with the day of the day typical for ordinary full-time learning. Secondly, I do not advise you (sorry) to engage remotely in domestic clothes: on the one hand, you see a teacher and classmates, and on the other hand, the observance of standard full-time rituals forces the body “will configure” to the essence of the process, ignoring the form. It is also necessary to take the listening material. Good discipline is the key to successful distance learning even more than successful full-time learning. This is confirmed by many studies, which means discipline must be observed.
Complexity number 2. The video material is poorly set in memory.
Returning to the discipline, it is necessary to record the material (especially lectures), even if you do not do it in the usual, daily study. The traditional perception of the video material is tightly connected with the perception of serials or films, which mainly do not require efforts to perceive and understand. After all, from the fact that the formulas are not written on the presentation (or chalk on the board), but on the video, they do not become clearer.
Moreover, listening to the recorded lecture will not help better understand it, as the revision of the film helps, but the abstract will help. Drive records right during a lecture or seminar. Complexity number 3. The teacher does not feel the audience
Many of the teachers of our universities have no experience in conducting remote activities. So they do not understand at all how to keep the attention of the audience in such a situation. They can not see the reaction with their eyes, which means it is hard to understand what their material does not understand. The remote is not just an online course.
To support the teacher and it is better to understand the material – ask questions immediately as they arise. Moreover, do not be afraid to set them even more than usual, it will allow the teacher to promptly adjust the material. Fix in the chat responses, if the teacher does not have time to enter them there.
In this aspect, the notorious quality of the educational process depends on you, as a student. Specify questions by mail and after a lecture or seminar. Without feedback, the process will fall apart.
Complexity number 4. The remote format requires self-preparation
Even if it is not voiced, self-preparation is the necessary element of the remote. Many materials Lecturers will not have time to tell you, even if they want very much, and coming to “homework” will be extremely difficult, especially if you have left home and you have a difference in time zones.
I do not advise you to leave home if you live further than in three time zones with a plus sign from the university. Evening lessons will end for you in the middle of the night.
Watch out for your gaps in knowledge yourself. Remember that the remote is more difficult than full-time learning, which means you need to apply more effort to result. Online courses, practice, where possible, multiple repetitions of tasks are the necessary elements of distance learning. By the way, do not forget to keep in touch with your group.
Difficulty number 5. I want to walk, not learn, or, on the contrary, just learn
The remote is saving time. You have a minimum of two hours a day that you do not spend on the road to the university. In many universities, the number of pairs will decrease, for example, due to the absence of physical education. I want to spend it on walks or rest.
