Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein have been cast in NBC’s “Hairspray Live,” the fourth live musical in the ongoing franchise. Fierstein, who is also penning the “Hairspray Live!” teleplay, will reprise the role of Edna Turnblad, the mother of main character Tracy Turnblad. Fierstein originated the role on Broadway and won a Tony Award for it in 2003. Hudson will play Motormouth Maybelle, the mother of Tracy’s classmate Seaweed and owner of a local record store.
Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, “Hairspray Live!” takes place in 1962 Baltimore as teenager Tracy Turnblad (in a role yet to be cast) attempts to launch a campaign to make local dance show “The Corny Collins Show” integrated. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will return as the producers.
