Michael Phelps Defeats a Shark to Kick Off Shark Week 2017 on Discovery

Discovery Channel used an interestingly unique gimmick to begin their annual Shark Week for 2017 on July 23: legendary Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, winner of a record 23 gold medals throughout his five Olympic Games appearances, was pitted against several sharks — a hammerhead shark, a reef shark and a great white shark — in two swimming races. Phelps, who wore swim gear that assisted his race speed, managed to defeat one of those sharks.
