Monday Final Nationals: ‘Kevin Can Wait’ on CBS and ‘The Good Place’ on NBC Off to Solid Starts

The No. 1 network on night #1 of the 2016-17 traditional TV season was ESPN with “Monday Night Football.”

ESPN won the night among all networks (broadcast or cable) in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos for the second time in as many weeks. The MNF game ranked as the #1 telecast of the night among all key male demos and adults 18-34 and 18-49.

On the downside, though, Philadelphia’s 29-14 victory over Chicago drew the lowest household rating ever for a Week 2 Monday Night Football game and was the least-watched Week 2 Monday Night Football game since 2011 (Rams-Giants 11.9 million). (Source: Sports Media Watch)

In Philadelphia, the game delivered a 16.2 rating on ESPN and a 13.4 on WPHL-IND, for a combined 29.6 rating in the market. In Chicago, the game delivered an 11.1 rating on ESPN and a 10.9 on WCIU-IND, for a combined 22.0 rating in the market. Two new comedies — “Kevin Can Wait” (CBS) and “The Good Place” (NBC) — premiered on this evening and each scored positive ratings and retention from their hit lead-ins:

‘Kevin Can Wait’ retention from “The Big Bang Theory” lead-in:
Total Viewers: 70 percent (11.078 million from 15.816 million)
Adults 18-49: 68 percent (2.6 rating from a 3.8 rating)

‘The Good Place’ at 10:00 retention from the 9:30 potion of “The Voice” lead-in:
Total Viewers: 72 percent (9.059 million from 12.432 million)
Adults 18-49: 74 percent (2.6 rating from a 3.5 rating)
