Monday Final Nationals: ‘Supergirl’ Soars in CW Debut

NBC was able to emerge victorious as Monday’s most-watched network with an average of 9.68 million in prime time, thanks to “The Voice”.

ESPN still won the night among all key demos with Tampa Bay-Carolina on “Monday Night Football” (5.59 household rating, 9.057 million viewers) but lost the viewer crown as sports fans were also tuning into the baseball playoffs in action on two cable networks (TBS and FS1); the nightcap game being the evening’s top highlight: the 13-inning classic NLDS Game 3 Cubs-Giants (2.46 household rating, 4.097 million viewers) on FS1 from 9:29 p.m.-2:47 a.m. ET.

The CW has a new hit in “Supergirl”, the superhero drama imported from parent network CBS. The show’s second season premiere telecast provided multi-year highs for a Monday night on the netlet: their most watched show in its 8 p.m. time period in nearly 8 years (GOSSIP GIRL on 12/1/08), the best rating in adults 18-49 (1.1/4) in nearly 6 years (90210 on 12/6/10), and its highest rating in adults 18-34 (0.9/4) in almost 5 years (11/21/11).

“Supergirl” was also The CW’s highest rated show ever in its time period in males 18-49 (1.2/4).

Compared to the same week last season (10/12/15, series premiere of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND), “Supergirl” more than tripled the performance in total viewers and all key demos.

  1. A show with 3 million viewers has never been and will never be a “hit” (well maybe if the population shrinks to 40 million people!).

Once again, the word loses all meaning when it’s applied to a big flop like Supergirl.

    • So all CW shows is worse flops then. Your whole mindset makes zero sense. You come off like a troll in all your comments here

      • I guess it had been too long since we had name-calling here.

        What a shame. 🙁

Just because someone says something you disagree with doesn’t mean they’re trolling, person-who-never-posted-here-before-and-now-insults-me… 😉

Yes. ALL shows on CW ARE flops.

        CW NEVER had any hit.

        Sorry for the screaming… 😉

It’s sad, but they’ve been that awful at picking shows.

The expression is “good for the CW”, and “good for the CW” means “bad”.

          • As Einstein once said, it doesn’t matter if a thousand experts disagree with me. It only takes one to prove me wrong.

A lot of fans take offense at calling the CW flops flops because they like comic-books and want more comic-book shows (given how awful they are I don’t really understand but that’s how it is).

CW has been for years trying to re-define its viewership levels as “good for CW”, making us forget that they are a major free-to-air network with 99% reach.

If you look objectively at their ratings, all their shows have flopped. No exception.

The fact you like one or more of them doesn’t change that sad statistic.

            • The problem with your mindset is how you determine what is a flop. A flop is a show or movie that falls below expectations. The CW shows are getting their expected ratings. It was never expected to be a CBS and it never will be.

              • The problem with your mindset is that you declare a show a hit if you set the expectation that it’ll fail. 😉

Sorry, couldn’t resist the wording. 🙂

But seriously, the CW is a major, free-over-the-air broadcast network.

There is no objective reason it should have different expectations than the other free-to-air networks.

It has roughly the same reach and has existed for years now.

The reason all its shows flop is because they’re bad.

Now you’d be right to say that even if they put on a good show, it’d probably have trouble doing well because for those viewers who even know CW still exists, their reputation as a provider of quality programming is completely shot.

Then again, it’s never happened so far in the whole history of the network.

But that is why I (and HelloLarry who shared my opinion) was saying that they need to can the whole network and re-brand if they want to continue.

At this point the very name “CW” carries negative equity.

                • Bad according to whom? Most the CW shows get high marks from the critics.
The Rotten Tomatoes scores for Supergirl, 98% positive. Arrow 97%, Flash 94%, Supernatural, 92%, Jane the Virgin 100%, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 98%.
Now compare that to some shows on CBS with high 18-49 ratings and high viewership. Bull 24%, Kevin Can Wait 30%, Man With a Plan 21%, 2 Broke Girls 0%, The Odd Couple 24%.
Basically CBS can put on any old crap and people eat that up. Because for some reason the name CBS seems to denote quality?

                  • Bad according to the viewers.

They could watch the shows, but choose not to.

It’s not because they’ve been blown away by the quality.

What you just demonstrated is that critics wouldn’t know a good, well-made show if they saw one…

Or perhaps they hate good shows – they certainly seem to love ratings-losers and hate anything successful…

The name CBS does denote quality for viewers (to a certain degree which is still more than any other network).

NBC used to denote quality back when. Now it’s Nothing But Crap when it comes to scripted shows sadly.

CW never had anything good and its reputation is so shot, many people don’t even remember it exists.

              • Spindae over on spoilertv is completely not thinking regarding SG. Saving face is this idiot for real, SG is finally giving them good ratings on mondays where they have struggled for years. Its such a tough timeslot for the CW with so many shows, NFL, WWE, Voice, DWTS, Kevin ect. Even the rating it got in ep 4 is 100% increase from last year. And this fool is taking about probably giving it short season renewal. Does this moron even know it will have 42 episodes under its belt after this season it will get full season renewals, also it was freakin halloween, SG is a family show so of course it dropped on that day. Hell Flash will drop next year when it will be against Halloween. Arrow dropped in s1 when it faced Halloween. Spindae, Ezio, CGS are clowns, they have absolutely no idea what they are babbling about, SG will last a long time. Thats for sure. Richard Dower is also insanely pathetic his views are insane. It was freakin HALLOWEEN. Every CW show that has faced it went down even Arrow in s1

                • You don’t seem to realize that ALL CW shows are flops.

                  They ALL have bad ratings.

Sorry to emphasize, but I find it amazing that there are still people outside the CW PR Department that seem to think any of their shows gets good ratings.

CW has been renewing flops for years and years, so getting renewed by CW is meaningless when it comes to evaluate commercial success (but so sweet for the producers lining their pockets making bad shows!!)

                  • The CW shows make Warner Bros. over $1 billion dollars a year. That’s almost as much as their superhero movies. You have no clue what a flop is.

                    • Do tell where you’re getting those hilarious figures from… 😉

Because if a flotilla of flops made so much money for Warner, imagine what a single hit like Big Bang would make!!!

I do know what a flop is: it’s a show with no viewers.

That’s what CW has a whole network of…

  2. Supergirl made a nice transition to CW. Demos are not far off from what it was doing on CBS at the end of last season. Should be more than enough to be profitable for CW. Given how the major networks often dip below a 1.0 demo these days, anytime the CW can get near or above a 1.0 is a good thing.

    • First a 1.0 rating in ANY demo is bad. I’ll remind all of us (except TerrenceMoss 🙂 ) that it means 1% of your target audience…

Second, they don’t get paid for that anyway.

Third, I don’t see how they’ll make money with a show that’s getting awful ratings.

It’s not like the other, higher-rated networks are rolling in the dough (as we can plainly see with the lack of marketing Dollars to launch new shows and the lack of enough product to replace flops).

“Good for the CW” = bad. 😉

      • Warner Bros. makes its money by selling syndication packages. The only purpose of the CW is it gives them a place to generate enough 1st run episodes to have a sell-able syndication package that they wouldn’t have with the broadcast networks. They lose money airing the shows, but overall is it profitable for them. So ratings are irrelevant.

        • That’s not really true.

While the syndication arm will generate money, it will be very little as it is selling shows people didn’t want to watch when they were brad new.

The overall result of the network’s losses and the tiny syndication (and foreign sales) revenue will be a negative.

Some network executives have been saying they don’t need they don’t need anyone to ever watch their shows to make money.

          It is evidently ridiculous.

When you make TV shows, you sell pairs of eyes. Even in syndication where, you may not know it, a lot of the sales are in barter (ie. the stations get the shows for free or very little and the syndicator keeps commercial time), you desperately need viewers to make money.
