Ratings Breakdown:
Led by freshman hit “The Good Doctor,” ABC opened the week on a winning household overnight note with a 31 percent advantage over second place CBS. “The Good Doctor” topped the evening with a 6.3 rating/11 share in the 10 p.m. hour, which bested competing “Scorpion” on CBS (#2: 3.6/ 6) and struggling freshman NBC entry “The Brave” (#3: 2.3/ 4) by 75 percent and 174 percent, respectively. “The Good Doctor” also built from lead-in “The Bachelor” (4.5/ 7 from 8-10 p.m.) by 40 percent, and it was more than triple the overnight household rating of year-ago time period occupant “Quantico” (2.0/ 3 on 1/23/17).
In time period premiere news was Fox medical drama “The Resident,” which finished third in the 9 p.m. ET hour with a respectable 3.4/ 5. Comparably, that increased from lead-in “Lucifer” (#4: 2.8/ 4 at 8 p.m.) by 21 percent. It was 42 percent above the season-finale of former time period occupant “The Gifted” one week earlier (2.4/ 7 on Jan. 15). And “The Resident” was also 21 percent above former time period occupant “Lucifer” on the year-ago evening (2.8/ 4 on 1/23/17).
On CBS, sophomore sitcom “Man With a Plan” (#2: 4.4/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.) had its best overnight retention to-date, 94 percent, out of lead-in “Kevin Can Wait” (#2: 4.7/ 8 at 8 p.m.). That should certainly bode well for a third season renewal. Next was sophomore “Superior Donuts” at a 3.9/ 6 (#2) in the 9 p.m. half-hour, followed by one-the-fence freshman entry “9JKL” at a third-place 3.3/ 5 at 9:30 p.m.
On NBC, game show “The Wall” finished third in the 8 p.m. hour, with a 3.4/ 5. And it led into sophomore comedy/docuseries “Better Late Than Never” at a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 at 9 p.m. Over at The CW, “Supergirl” scored at typical 1.6/ 2 in the household overnights at 8 p.m., leading into a modest 0.7/ 1 for canceled military drama “Valor” at 9 p.m. (#5).
