As always, keep in mind that the fast affiliate rating results from Nielsen are time period based and, therefore, only an approximate first look at what lies ahead. And, of course, there are other factors to consider other than these Nielsen results.

That said, CBS and NBC opened the season tied for dominance, with CBS’ total viewer victory a result of the arrival of “NCIS” to the Monday 9 p.m. ET hour. The veteran military crime drama lifted the time period to 8.15 million viewers (the most-watched show of the evening), with a 0.7 rating/4 share in adults 18-49 (#3). Comparably, that was 91 percent above the year-ago “All Rise” season-opener in audience size. And it led into the series premiere of spin-off “NCIS: Hawai’i” with a dominant 6.33 million viewers (which was 41 percent above year-ago time period occupant “Bull”) and a third-place 0.5/ 3 in the demo at 10 p.m. Even so, a mere 0.5 in the demo is nothing to boast about.

“NCIS: Hawai’i” faced the series premiere of NBC drama “Ordinary Joe”, which dipped considerably from lead-in “The Voice” with 3.81 million viewers (#2) and a 0.5/ 4 in adults 18-49 (#1t). “The Voice”, of course, featured the arrival of new judge Ariana Grande, and it topped the night in the demo with a 1.0/ 7 from 8-10 p.m. “The Voice” also led its two-hour block in total viewers (6.98 million). Competing “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC opened its new season with 5.48 million viewers (#3) and a 0.9/ 6 in adults 18-49 (#2) from 8-10 p.m. Worth repeating from last year: Tom Bergeron is sorely missed.

Also launching last night was Fox drama “The Big Leap”, which was a huge fizzle at an introductory 1.97 million viewers (#4) and a 0.4/ 2 in the demo (#4) in the Monday 9 p.m. hour. Lead-in “9-1-1” opened its new season with a considerably healthier 5.26 million viewers (#3) and a 0.8/ 5 in adults 18-49 (#2) at 8 p.m. Since most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, consider “The Big Leap” dead on arrival on Fox.

Also in season premiere news were CBS Monday 8-9 p.m. comedies “The Neighborhood” (Viewers: #4, 5.12 million; A18-49: #4, 0.6/ 4 at 8 p.m.) and “Bob Hearts Abishola” (Viewers: #3, 5.24 million; A18-49: #4, 0.5/ 3 at 8:30 p.m.), which fit well together but demonstrate the lack of interest the Eye net has in the key adult 18-49 demo group.

In the specials department was “Time 100” on ABC, which led out of “Dancing With the Stars” with a modest (and last place) 2.12 million viewers and a 0.4/ 2 in adults 18-49.

The CW, meanwhile, populated this first night of the 2021-22 TV season with drama “Roswell, New Mexico” (Viewers: #5, 493,000; A18-49: #5, 0.1/ 1 at 8 p.m.) and an encore telecast of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us.”
