“The Band’s Visit,” a musical about an Egyptian police orchestra stranded for a night in Israel, swept the 2018 “Tony Awards” on CBS last night, winning 10 trophies including Best Musical. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two,” a sequel to the seven-novel series, won Best Play. Best Revival of a Play went to “Angels in America.” And, in a major upset, “Once on This Island” defeated “Carousel” and “My Fair Lady” to win best Musical Revival.
The acting prizes for a play went to Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane for “Angels in America” and Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf for “Three Tall Women.” Tony Shalhoub and Katrina Lena, meanwhile, won for Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.
Of note: After Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School drama teacher Melody Herzfeld received the Excellence in Theatre Education Award,, the audience was treated to a surprise performance by the Stoneman Douglas drama kids themselves.
