‘The Boys in the Band’ Reunites on Netflix

Broadway Play to Be Revived in Movie Format on the Digital Streamer

Mart Crowley’s 1968 play “The Boys in the Band,” which debuted on Broadway last year, will be adapted as a movie for Netflix. The project is from Ryan Murphy, who produced the revival alongside David Stone, and it follows a group of gay men who convene in a New York City apartment for a friend’s birthday party. As the evening continues, the cracks beneath their friendships begin to show, bringing to light self-inflicted heartache and identity crises.

The full cast of the Joe Mantello-helmed Broadway production, including Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells and Matt Bomer, will reprise their performances. Mantello will also direct the movie, expected to begin production mid-July in Los Angeles and drop on the streaming service in 2020.

Also featured in the cast will be Tony nominee Robin De Jesús as Emory, Brian Hutchison as Alan, Michael Benjamin Washington as Bernard, Tuc Watkins as Hank, and Charlie Carver as Cowboy.
