The WA Guineas 2020 forms part of Perth Summer Racing Carnival 2020 events that takes place in Perth, Western Australia. The WA Guineas 2020 day is on 21st November 2020, the same day Railway Stakes takes place. This event is held on the first of the main Western Australian race days for the summer period. Horses participating in the WA Guineas are thoroughbred, three years old, and must be of certain standard weights. Unlike in the Railway stakes race whose winner is awarded one million dollars, WA Guineas winners go home with five hundred thousand dollars. The racing event will be hosted at the famous Ascot Racecourse, and the official set distance for the 2020 event is sixteen hundred meters.
WA Guineas 2020 acts as a pacesetter preparing the participants of Group 1 Kingdom Town Classic held two weeks after the WA Guineas Race event. Previously some horses scooped both the WA Guineas and Kingston Town Classic consecutively. These horses include: Ihtsahymn received a double win in 2013, Playing God won both races in 2010, and in 2018 Arcadia Queen became the lucky Horse. On the day of the race, Ascot Racecourse is fully occupied by the lovers of WA Guineas Race and Railways Stakes since the run concurrently.
The WA Guineas History
The race was established on 15th November 1937 as a mark of the King’s born day. It was set to include three years old thoroughbred horses having exact weight for their age. Between 1941-1942, the race did not occur due to wartime economies but was reinstated in 1943. From its birth to 1971 was over 1609metres and changed to 1600 meters from 1972 up-to-date. From 1937-1978, participants were for the principal race until 1978 when they only included Group 2 horses. Although the official place to hold this race since its birth is Ascot Racecourse, in 2003, the WA Guineas took place at Belmont Park Racecourse.
