Thursday Final Nationals: CBS and NFL Network Share Leadership

CBS was Thursday night’s most-watched network with an average of 7.67 million viewers while also topping among adults 25-54 (2.3 rating/7 share). While their two freshman series held decently in their second weeks on the air…

Episode #2 of “The Great Indoors” (CBS) erosion from series premiere:
Total Viewers: -9 percent (8.055 million from 8.894 million)
Adults 18-49: -16 percent (1.6 rating from a 1.9 rating)

Episode #2 of “Pure Genius” (CBS) erosion from series premiere:
Total Viewers: -14 percent (5.374 million from 6.229 million)
Adults 18-49: -10 percent (0.9 rating from a 1.0 rating)

…“Pure Genius” continued to lag behind ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” and NBC’s “The Blacklist” in young demos within the 10 p.m. hour and drew less same-day viewers than “The Blacklist.”

NFL Network led among adults 18-49 (approx. 1.9 rating) and adults 18-34 (approx. 1.4 rating) with Atlanta Falcons at Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Thursday Night Football.” It was the first game this season that NBC’s NFL crew (with announcers Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth) produced the NFL Network Thursday telecast. The NBC broadcast network will commence simulcasting “Thursday Night Football” with NFL Network on Nov. 17.

  1. Douglas, kind of an offbeat request, but do you have any numbers for Wheel of Fortune on GSN at 11:00 AM? Thanks!

      • Unsurprisingly, not hit becomes a flop or vice versa, but it’s better to see it with own own eyes. 🙂

        • Yeah, but then DVR numbers don’t count much. If a show has a lot of live viewers, they will also have a lot of DVR viewers, so basically the numbers of all of the show increase proportionately. The #1 live rated show tends to be the #1 DVRed show., etc. The DVR numbers are basically good for PR purposes.

          • You got it exactly right. 🙂

The networks love the “percentage increase” because it makes it look like their low-rated shows are really doing great because most people don’t realize that percentages don’t represent the same thing depending of where you start from.

A property that goes down 50%, then goes up 100% ends up where it started even though the percentages make it look like it gained 50%…

DVR numbers also count less (as far as advertising) because it means fewer people watch the commercials (although contrary to popular belief you still watch some of the commercials when you DVR, at least I do…)

            • Yeah but like I said, a highly rated live show will also be a highly DVRed show and a lower rated live show will also have a lower rated DVRed show. It’s just a matter of shifting the numbers but the show’s rank basically stays the same. And yeah, the networks look at the numbers where you can’t FF the ads (that’s where you get the revenue). It makes sense, right.? And yeah, I do the same – I have stuff on the DVR and forget it is the DVR where I can FF the ads. But then I don’t count anyway because I’m not a Neilsen metered viewer. However, I also see Networks factoring in the other forms of viewings now – On Demand and Live streaming (where you can’t FF the ads). Not as many viewers as regular Live viewing but I’m sure that small amount does get factored in to their decision on renewing a show.

              • What a refreshingly untainted-by-spin view. 🙂

On On-Demand and streaming, you are correct, with the important caveat that we have no real access to those numbers.

Since Nielsen either doesn’t track them themselves or doesn’t give out the numbers to the press, we only have the networks to give us those numbers, which means that they’re free to tell us whatever they feel like saying…

I notice in the past amazingly-high occurrences of flops miraculously having oodles of viewers uncounted by Nielsen…

That’s why I pay no heed to the networks’ claims of off-network successes even if they may actually have some.

Similarly, box-office figures should be neatly put into the “fiction” category of your virtual library… 🙂
