Thursday Ratings: ‘Field of Dreams’ Baseball Game Lifts Fox to Victory

Fox moved into the fast affiliate winner’s circle care of the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa (the setting for the beloved 1989 sports -themed film with Kevin Costner). The match-up averaged an estimated 5.07 million viewers and a 1.2 rating/10 share in the Thursday 8-11 p.m. ET block. As always, results for any live sporting event are approximate.

“MLB at Field of Dreams” is projected to be the largest MLB audience for a regular season matchup in over a decade.

The Yankees-White Sox thriller remained relatively steady through the night.

Despite its references to decades-old baseball nostalgia, the game generated sizable interest in all key demographics, leading the night in the following: adults 18-49 (1.2 rating), males 18-49 (1.5), adults 18-34 (0.9), males 18-34 (1.1), females 18-34 (0.7), adults 25-54 (1.5), and males 25-54 (1.8).

In season premiere news was two episodes of the final season of sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, which averaged 2.53 million viewers (#4) and a 0.6/ 4 in adults 18-49 (#3) on NBC from 8-9 p.m. ET. That led into comical competition series “Making It”, which dipped to 1.73 million viewers (#3) and a 0.4/ 3 (#3) in the demo (and led into an encore telecast of “Law & Order: Organized Crime”).

Yes, there was finally some conflict on CBS summer staple “Big Brother” (go “Big D”!), and it averaged 4.58 million viewers and a 1.0/ 8 in adults 18-49 — second in both categories — in the Thursday 8 p.m. ET hour. “Big Brother” is one of the few broadcast network series not to be down year to year.

Next on CBS was dating/relationship-themed “Love Island”, which dipped to 2.68 million viewers (#2) and a 0.6/ 5 in the demo (#2) at 9 p.m. (and led into a repeat of “Bull”).

Elsewhere, “Walker” (Viewers: #5, 1.19 million; A18-49: #5, 0.1/ 1 at 8 p.m.) concluded its first season on The CW. It led into “The Outpost” at 614,000 viewers (#5) and a 0.1/ 1 in the demo (#5) at 9 p.m. And ABC capped off the evening with its schedule of “Holey Moley” (Viewers: #3, 2.74 million; A18-49: #4, 0.4/ 3 at 8 p.m.), “When Nature Calls with Helen Mirren” (Viewers: #4, 1.65 million; A18-49: #4, 0.3/ 2 at 9 p.m.) and game show “The Hustler” (Viewers: #3, 1.68 million; A18-49: #4, 0.3/ 2 at 10 p.m.).
