Ratings Breakdown:
CBS topped the household overnights on this first Tuesday of the new TV season, besting No. 2 NBC by six percent. The positive news for both networks, in particular, was positive sampling for new dramas “F.B.I.” and “New Amsterdam.”

“F.B.I.” on CBS opened with a 6.7 rating/11 share in households in the 9 p.m. hour, which was right on par with year-ago time period occupant “Bull.” Comparably, “F.B.I.” held 80 percent of the lead-in support from the season premiere of “NCIS” (#1 for the night: 8.4/14 at 8 p.m.). And it was consistent in the two half-hours (9 p.m.: 6.8/11, 9:30 p.m.: 6.6/11). “NCIS,” meanwhile, was close to the 8.7/14 year-ago season premiere.

On NBC, medical drama “New Amsterdam” at 10 p.m. ET finished a close second behind the season premiere of CBS’ “NCIS: New Orleans” (5.9/11 vs. 6.2/12). But “New Amsterdam” is a lock for dominance in adults adult 18-49 (and all the key young adult demos). Comparably, “New Amsterdam” opened 37 percent above the year-ago series premiere of “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Brothers” (4.3/ 8 on 9/26/17), and it held 79 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “This Is Us” (7.5/12).

Overall, “This Is Us” scored a 7.7/12 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m., building by 17 percent from lead-in “The Voice” (#2: 6.6/11 from 8-9 p.m.). And “This Is Us,” no doubt, will lead the evening in all the key demos.

Also opening for the season last night was Fox’s pairing of dramas “The Gifted” (#4: 2.0/ 3 at 8 p.m.), which is dependent on social media support, and relocated “Lethal Weapon” (#4: 2.7/ ), which built by 35 percent.

Elsewhere, ABC offered a live two-hour “Dancing With the Stars” results show, which was on the overnight map at a 4.8/ 8 from 8-10 p.m. That led into a Tuesday 10 p.m. edition of “20/20,” which could not compete at a 2.0/ 3. And The CW, which is ducking the competition this week, featured a repeat of “The Flash” into summer drama “The Outpost,” each at a 0.4/ 1 in the household overnights.
