Tuesday Scorecard: CBS and NBC Share Dominance; Modest Return for ‘New Amsterdam’

New ABC Documentary Series 'Soul of a Nation' Left at the Tuesday 10 p.m. ET Starting Gate

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 – Preliminary Ratings

Total Viewers:
CBS: 7.37 million, NBC: 4.36, Fox: 2.66, ABC: 2.48, CW: 1.14

Adults 18-49:
NBC: 0.7 rating/5 share, CBS: 0.6/ 4, Fox: 0.5/ 3, ABC: 0.4/ 3, CW: 0.3/ 2

CBS granddaddy “NCIS”, of course, topped the evening in total viewers with 9.34 million (and it won the Tuesday 8 p.m. ET hour in adults 18-49, with a 0.8 rating/5 share). But the mighty has indeed fallen, which only magnifies how the growing digital landscape has negatively impacted the linear broadcast platforms.

Of course, the smaller lead-in support from “NCIS” did not help lead-out dramas “FBI” (Viewers: #1, 7.20 million; A18-49: #2, 0.8/ 5) and “FBI: Most Wanted” (Viewers: #1, 5.57 million; A18-49: #2, 0.5/ 3) from 9-11 p.m.

In season-premiere news, NBC medical drama “New Amsterdam” did not impress with 4.17 million viewers (#2) and a 0.6/ 4 in adults 18-49 (#1) in the 10 p.m. hour. Comparably, retention out of a Tuesday 9 p.m. edition of “The Voice” (Viewers: #2, 6.16 million; A18-49: #1, 0.9/ 6) was adequate at 68 percent in viewers and 67 percent in the demo.

Also opening for the season was “The Flash” on The CW, which at 1.03 million viewers (#5) and a 0.3/ 2 in adults 18-49 (#5) at 8 p.m. has also been negatively impacted by the digital surge. Of positive note for The CW, however, was a rise to 1.25 million viewers for just renewed “Superman & Lois” (also with a 0.3/ 2 in adults 18-49 at 9 p.m.). Both shows, of course, are dependent on social media interest (which, no doubt, will be significant).

In series-premiere news was ABC documentary series “Soul of a Nation”, which was left at the Tuesday 10 p.m. starting gate at just 1.82 million viewers (#3) and a 0.3/ 2 in the demo (#3).,

Elsewhere, NBC sitcom “Young Rock” (*Viewers: #4, 3.12 million; 18-49: #3, 0.6/ 4 at 8 p.m.) is more promising than lead-out “Kenan” (Viewers: #4, 2.36 million; A18-49: #2t, 0.5/ 3 at 8:30 p.m.). ABC’s “To Tell The Truth” (Viewers: #2, 3.73 million; A18-49: #4, 0.5/ 3) led into typical modest results for comedies “black-ish” (Viewers: #3, 2.14 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.4/ 2) and spinoff “Mixed-ish” (Viewers: #4: 1.65 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.3/ 2 at 9:30 p.m.). Note to ABC: Maybe it is time to slow down on any sitcom with an “ish” in the title. And the addition of Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones on Fox drama “Prodigal Son” (Viewers: #4, 1.84 million; A18-49: #4t, 0.3/ 2 at 9 p.m.) was not exactly beneficial.
