LLWS Preview:

It’s that time of the year again. It’s the time of the year where the best 12-year-olds in baseball compete in Williamsport, Penn. with the hopes of being crowned Little League World Series
champions.

Last season, we saw Huntington Beach, California take home the crown, representing the West Region of the United States. That team defeated Billings, Montana in the U.S. Championship by nine runs, but barely escaped a tight championship matchup against World Champions Japan.

The competition looks to be as good as ever this year, and the teams have already started to practice as their first matchups start on Thursday and Friday. Although the more impactful games won’t be played until toward the end of August, each game is still vital for the teams.

A team can win the Little League World Series with a loss on their resume, but losing early greatly affects their chances. It can be done though as Huntington Beach lost in the third round of the U.S. bracket and battled all the way back to win the entire tournament.

The teams representing the United States are California, Nebraska, Tennessee, Connecticut, New Jersey, Texas, Indiana, and Oregon. One of those teams will take on Japan, Curacao, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Panama, British Columbia, Uganda, or Tamaulipas for the world championship.

The U.S. has dominated the last few tournaments, winning six of the last seven. Can the U.S. add to their already impressive resume or will an International team finally come out on top?

Here’s everything to know about the Little League World Series in 2021, including a full TV schedule plus an updated bracket and scores for every game.

LLWS fun facts:

  • In 1957, the first Little League World Series champions from outside the United States were a team from Monterrey, Mexico, when Angel Macias pitched the first and only perfect game in the LLWS to defeat La Mesa, California, 4-0 in the final. The true-life story was later made into a Hollywood film, The Perfect Game, in 2009.
  • Although coverage only included the championship game, the first televised Little League World Series aired on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” in 1963.
  • The LLWS final has been played only once without a U.S. team. The year was 1985 when Mexicali, Mexico advanced all the way to the championship, ultimately losing to Seoul, South Korea.
  • The LLWS is truly a “world” series. Teams from six different continents compete, although no team from Europe, Africa, or the Middle East has ever made it to the final.
  • Little League is where the first batting helmet with ear coverings was implemented, along with aluminum bat, and the remote-controlled scoreboard. All three innovations were eventually adopted by Major League Baseball.
