Wednesday Final Nationals: Cubs-Indians World Series on Fox Continues Double-Digit Year-to-Year Increases

Fox winning Wednesday nights isn’t new — it regularly wins the evening whenever it airs “Empire.” But on this night, the network clearly dominated with Game 2 of “2016 World Series” featuring the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians, marking it Fox’s best Wednesday night ratings performance since Game 7 of the 2014 World Series on Oct. 29, 2014.

Despite a one-hour accelerated start time (7 p.m. ET) due to an approaching weather system, the game’s 10.2 U.S. household rating/18 share and 17.395 million viewers (on Fox) made it the highest-rated and most-watched Game 2 of the Fall Classic since 2009 (Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees, 19.2 million viewers).

Cubs-Indians Game 2 showed a +27 percent increase over 2015’s 13.7 million viewers for Game 2 between the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals. That is also a +35 percent gain over 2014’s Game 2 between the Royals and the San Francisco Giants (12.9 million viewers).

Wednesday night’s game also showed significant double-digit ratings increases over 2015 in a number of key demographics, including a +23 percent increase in both the A18-49 (4.8 vs. 3.9) and males 12-17 (2.7 vs. 2.2) categories, in addition to a +18 percent lift in the males 18-49 demo (5.8 vs. 4.9).

The game averaged 278,000 viewers on Fox Deportes, a +52 percent increase over last year’s World Series Game 2 (141,000 viewers). An additional 115,004 viewers comprised the average minute audience on Fox Sports GO, contributing to the combined total of 17.8 million viewers.

Viewership on the Fox broadcast network peaked at 20.4 million viewers between 9:00 PM – 9:15 PM ET.

Cleveland once again led all markets with an impressive 38.9/55 for Game 2, while Chicago posted a 35.4/52.

    • Watch for the media to start hyping “FOX’s comeback” because it’s having a better baseball playoff… 😉

      • LOL! I know it’s gotta be coming but reality set in when their Thursday ratings came in last night.

        • Ever since they’ve had the MLB Playoffs, their averages have depended on that (a little less so now) and every year they had a better playoff, the media reflexively used the aggregates to claim FOX was making a huge comeback, even as it kept failing to find hits.

            • It won’t be, but it’ll likely be enough for a Fall season improvement (especially given how awful last season was) and probably for an overall season that’ll be 2nd or 3rd worst all time, which will be translated into “Fox is improving”.

NBC does that every four years with the Winter Olympics as you’re one of the few who goes back and does compares with the last comparable year (and kudos for that 🙂 ).

                • The short World Series is a good step towards your prediction. I still think the Super Bowl will help them claim they are on the rebound.

That said, when it comes to their non-sport programming, I think you’ll be correct.

It’s too bad nobody compiles those numbers.

I started last year but I seemed ot be the only one interested so I quit. 🙂

  1. LMFAO! Come on Sob! Really? Really? I knew you were going to bring up the World Series excuse. What excuse do you have for viewers not liking the liberal content on there and Chicago PD had to face the World Series too and won the slot and got a 1.3 in the demo while DS had a 1.7 lead-in.

Plus it wasn’t good that all of the ABC comedies went up against the World Series and did well. So what was DS’ excuse?

Just admit this show is a failure and may I remind you last year was when Nashville was old and tired, a better comparison is season 1 when Nashville was not even in the low 1s to this point.

I’ll give you this about DS if there’s no game 7 next week I expect it go up to a 1.4 at least. I’m only giving DS a .2 point loss against the WS the other .2 points from that 1.6 came from it becoming a bad show and a bad flop.

      • That’s actually why DS is struggling so much in that slot because Chicago PD sucks up most of the female demo in that slot. Chicago PD isn’t a powerful ratings player but its strength is sucking up female demos that’s why nothing new lasts against it. I think that’s why Nashville started to struggle too in the middle of its run in 2014 when PD first came in.

Just because DS will be on the 2017-18 doesn’t mean it’s successful. The Real O’Neals and several other shows like Scream Queens returned with a 1.0 or fractional ratings. Even Nashville after a bad 2014-15 season returned for 2015-16.

        • Nashville didn’t even hit a 1.2 until May of 2014, and received those ratings until September of 2016, and then managed to fall only .4 more in its entire run. Massively stable. DS is not even halfway through season 1, and collapsing, already. Most likely it’ll be fractional and or = to Nashville’s ratings by May.

          • Viewership is the real yardstick.

ABC used demos to spin Nashville’s numbers as not being as bad as they were.

The show was a disaster from season one on.

ABC deserves kudos for trying something else and getting slightly less awful numbers for now, but it once again failed to get a hit.

            • Viewership means nothing, networks don’t care how many people watch. The show wasn’t not a disaster from season one on. It was a success in its first season, and only started to hit low numbers halfway through the second season. You are right, they did fail to gain a hit.

              • Sorry to tell you but viewership means everything.

The networks sell pairs of eyes and don’t give away the “wrong” ones for free.

To give you a current example, do you think political parties are paying more to reach 18-49 viewers, which are less likely to go vote that people over 50?

Of course they’re not. The same goes for innumerable products.

But proudly ageist Hollywood loves to use the now-old “nobody’s watching our network but they’re all younger than those watching the other network” excuse and sadly Hollywood’s press, who should know better, goes with the ageist spin.

          • That’s true too because I remember for the longest Nashville not getting to low 1s for a very long time and it was stable even last season it was stable for the most part and reliable. DS is steadily dropping when I thought it would start to settle in. DS is not halfway or even 8 episodes in. I do see it going fractional and if it keeps dropping below 1.2 that has a real possibility of happening.

Another huge difference in both shows is that creatively fans weren’t upset like they were with DS, I’ve been hearing about the liberal stuff turning viewers off and that’s bad so it can keep slipping probably at this point.

            • That needs to be left at the door. No politics in TV. Nashville only went fractional on episode 74, and that’s when fans stopped watching due to HP leaving. DS will be fractional come May

              • Given that I think Hayden Pannetiere is the main reason the show flopped, I’d have thought her leaving would have gotten people to give the show a shot… 😉

            • I realize you like the show, but its numbers were reliably bad.

As for the demo numbers, see above. 🙂

            • You make a great point about shows getting more and more preachy.

It’s another way shows have gotten way worse recently.

People like David Kelley and Aaron Sorkin were great at having a debate of ideas on their shows that did not feel like you were being indoctrinated, and while you could guess where they fell on the arguments, you didn’t feel like you were talked down to or indoctrinated.

A great example of that change is Boy Meets World/Girl Meets World.

The original was an enjoyable kids’ show that managed to capture family life to a surprisingly great extent. The remake quickly became an exercise in political indoctrination.

As Studio Bosses used to say: “if you want to send a message, use Western Union”.

        • Doing better than Nashville is not a yardstick of success.

ABC can say” we could have done ever worse”, but that doesn’t make their numbers good.

I also regret to disagree, but Chicago PD has nothing to do with it. its 6 million viewers is not siphoning anything away.

All those shows are failing. That’s as simple and sad as that.

      • Sorry to point it out, but no show already down to 6 million overnight viewers can be deemed “very successful”.

They may make 12 seasons of it, but with those ratings it’ll only be a PR spin “success”.

          • I realize you’re a fan of it, but being renewed is no longer a sign of success (except of the political games played to get the show renewed by the network).

ABC has no drama hits left. If it was a real success, and not a very relative one, it would easily be #1.

Just being solid would leap it to #1.

I still do give ABC points for canning Nashville, but take back most of them for not doing it three years ago.

    • I’ll point out that even if the demo numbers were meaningful, what they’re saying is that none of those shows get 2% of the potential audience…

Even in using the measure the ageist spinmeisters love to use, they’re still all doing badly.

  3. It IS entertaining to read you two, so I’m not complaining. 🙂

Obviously, I’d been saying the worst about Nashville’s numbers for a long time…
