Wednesday Ratings: NBC and CBS Share Dominance; Slow Openings for ABC’s ‘The Wonder Years’ and Fox’s ‘Alter Ego’

NBC: 6.64 million, CBS: 4.98, Fox: 3.64, ABC: 2.67, CW: 328,000

Adults 18-49:
CBS: 0.9 rating/7 share, NBC and Fox: 0.8/ 6 each, ABC: 0.5/ 4, CW: 0.1/ 0

As always, keep in mind that the fast affiliate rating results from Nielsen are time period based and, therefore, only an approximate first look at what lies ahead. And, of course, there are other factors to consider other than these Nielsen results.

NBC, as expected, topped this first Wednesday of the new TV season in total viewers care of the season-opening episodes of its “Chicago”-trio as follows:

NBC/Wednesday
8:00 p.m. “Chicago Med” (season premiere)
Viewers: 6.54 million (#1), A18-49: 0.7 rating/6 share (#3)

9:00 p.m. “Chicago Fire” (season premiere)
Viewers: 7.03 million (#1), A18-49: 0.8/ 6 (#2)

10:00 p.m. “Chicago Med” (season premiere)
Viewers: 6.35 million (#1), A18-49: 0.8/ 7 (#1)

Needless to say, the compatibility is flawless.

CBS, meanwhile, finished first overall in adults 18-49 as a result of the long-awaited two-hour season premiere of “Survivor”, which averaged 6.02 million viewers (#2) and a 1.0/ 8 in the demo (#1) from 8-10 p.m. The episode remained steady throughout the two-hour period:

8:00 p.m.: Viewers: 6.68 million (#1), A18-49: 1.1 rating/8 share (#1)
8:30 p.m.: Viewers: 5.98 million (#2), A18-49: 1.0 rating/7 share (#2)
9:00 p.m.: Viewers: 5.89 million (#2), A18-49: 1.0 rating/8 share (#1)
9:30 p.m.: Viewers: 5.54 million (#2), A18-49: 0.9 rating/7 share (#1)

Comparably, that tied the season-premiere of Fox’s  competing “The Masked Singer” in adults 18-49 (which scored 4.42 million viewers in adults 18-49 in the 8 p.m. ET hour). And it led into a Wednesday 10 p.m. edition of “Big Brother” (Viewers: #2, 2.90 million; A18-49: #2, 0.6/ 5), which finally concludes for the season next Wednesday.

In series premiere news, Fox singing competition “Alter Ego” (just what we needed, right?) opened with 2.85 million viewers (#3) and a 0.6/ 4 in adults 18-49 (#3) out of “The Masked Singer.”

On ABC, the reboot of sitcom “The Wonder Years” at 8:30 p.m. got off to a slow start out of the season premiere of “The Goldbergs.” But the weakest comedy link for the alphabet net was the second season premiere of “Home Economics” out of “The Conners.” Take a look:

Minus the lead-in support (yes…lead in still matters), ABC relationship drama “A Million Little Things” opened its new season with a mere 2.01 million viewers and a 0.3/ 2 in adults 18-49 – third in both categories – at 10 p.m.

Cellar-dweller The CW capped off the evening with perennially low-rated dramas “Riverdale” (Viewers: 378,000; A18-49: 0.1/ 1 at 8 p.m.) and “In The Dark” (Viewers: 278,000; A18-49: 0.0/ 0).
