‘Greenleaf’ Spinoff in the Works at OWN

Series to Conclude its Five Season Run on June 23

Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and producer Lionsgate TV are developing a spinoff from church drama “Greenleaf,” which concludes its five season run on Tuesday, June 23. “Greenleaf” centers on a Memphis family that runs a sprawling megachurch in Memphis chock full of scandalous secrets and lies. The series stars Merle Dandridge, Keith David, Lynn Whitfield, Kim Hawthorne, Lamman Rucker and Deborah Joy Winans.

From the inception of “Greenleaf,” series creator and producer Craig Wright and executive producer Oprah Winfrey envisioned that the story would span five seasons, with Wright contemplating a spin-off. These plans accelerated when fans expressed their support for the show after its final season was announced. There are no details at present which characters will participate in the potential spinoff and what the potential storyline will be.

“Greenleaf” won the 2020 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Drama Series, and Lynn Whitfield was named Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the second year in a row.
