‘Hairspray’ Live Musical Coming to NBC in December

Fourth Live NBC Musical Follows 'The Sound of Music,' 'Peter Pan Live' and 'The Wiz'

NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt opened NBC’s executive session by announcing there is a deal in the works for “Hairspray” to be the next live musical event on the network. It follows live editions of “The Sound of Music,” “Peter Pan” and “The Wiz,” and it is expected to air on the first Thursday in December. “The Wiz” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will return for the project.

The first “Hairspray” film, written and directed by John Waters and starring Ricki Lake and Debbie Harry, was in 1988. “Hairspray” then hit Broadway in 2002, and the 2007 theatrical remake featured John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer and was also produced by Zadan and Meron.
