This Tuesday night was an abbreviated prime time in programming due to the 69-minute State of the Union address by President Obama. CBS was the most-watched network with 8.47 million total viewers while NBC and Fox tied for the lead among adults 18-49 with a 1.2 rating and 4 share.
Cumulatively across multiple networks, the speech drew 31.3 million viewers — a record low for the State of the Union; down -1 percent from a year ago (31.7 million). CBS was TV’s top network to cover it with 6.89 million viewers. CNN edged out Fox News Channel in total viewers as cable’s top network to televise the State of the Union address.
The top cable entry among adults 18-49 for the day belonged to the return of “Pretty Little Liars” with a 1.06 rating on the newly rebranded Freeform channel (formerly ABC Family). This benefited the series launch of “Shadowhunters” which ranked as Freeform/ABC Family’s #1 series debut in over two years in total viewers (1.82 million), adults 18-34 (534,000/0.8 rating), adults 18-49 (965,000/0.8 rating), women 18-49 (659,000/1.0 rating) and viewers 12-34 (809,000/0.9 rating) – since “Ravenswood” (10/22/13) and the #4 cable TV drama launch overall of the past 12 months in 18-34 and 12-34 demos, behind only AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Better Call Saul” and “Into the Badlands,” of which the latter two benefited from their “The Walking Dead” lead in.
In the hour, “Shadowhunters” stood as the #1 cable TV telecast across 18-34 and 12-34 measures and was the #1 scripted original cable TV telecast in Adults 18-49 and Women 18-49.
